Choking

DD has a real problem with choking while nursing.  I thought it would get better as she gets older and bigger but it seems to be almost getting worse.  Sometimes it happens when my milk lets down but not always.  She'll be nursing and then I'll hear loud gulping sounds, she'll pull off, and start crying like crazy.  It's almost every time I feed her.  I try to keep her as upright as possible but I'm pretty short.  The only time this isn't an issue is when I nurse her lying down.  She doesn't choke at all then which I don't get.  Any suggestions?  Thank you!

  • I have the same problem. He pulls off and screams and I can't tell if he wants to nurse more or what because he is crying. I'm not sure what to do, but I find he does better lying down too!

  • same problem. if i see i have tons of milk coming out then i'll squirt some into a cloth and have her relatch, which helps for a couple of minutes
  • Sometimes this happens to me too. I think it is from Forceful Letdown. My LC said it's like the baby trying to drink from a fire hose it's coming out so fast. You can take baby off for a moment, let some milk drip, or express some, into a towel and then re-latch baby. Also, if sitting up, try to lean back, definitely not forward, to help gravity work against milk flow.
