Trying to Get Pregnant

1 a day vs. prenatal

I noticed on here many if not most women are taking a PNV.  I went to CVS to purchase one and I noticed that the women's one a day has several more supplements in it than the CVS brand PNV. 

I think Zinc, copper, selenium, chromium, and one or two others were missing from the PNV.  Also I noticed that the amounts are doubled on many items in the PNV.  For example, instead of 100% daily value of vitamin C there is 200% of daily value. 

I have not yet been to the doctors to ask about PNV.  Do you think even though there is less supplements the PNV is better to take?  200% of daily values seems excessive to me if you are not KU.  Don't you think your body just gets rid of all the excess?

BTW, One a day has 100% daily value of folic acid.

  • This is what WebMD says should be in them. When I was researching other sites the only thing I found that should be significantly higher was calcium. I take an extra 500mg of calcium!

    Look for one that contains approximately:

    • 4,000 and 5,000 IU (international units) of vitamin A
    • 800 and 1,000 mcg (1 mg) of folic acid
    • 400 IU of vitamin D
    • 200 to 300 mg of calcium
    • 70 mg of vitamin C
    • 1.5 mg of thiamine
    • 1.6 mg of riboflavin
    • 2.6 mg of pyridoxine
    • 17 mg of niacinamide
    • 2.2 mcg of vitamin B12
    • 10 mg of vitamin E
    • 15 mg of zinc
    • 30 mg of iron

  • I couldn't take one a days because the amount of calcium was too high for me (causes constipation).  I just take Walgreen's PNV with DHA capsules.

    True story, and many of the minerals (like selenium, chromium, etc) are extreeeeeemely miniscule.  If you're eating a healthy, balanced diet, you're likely consuming enough of these to not worry about some absent in PNVs.

  • The one a day is low on some of those you listed and high on others.  Well thanks for the info.  I'm sure I'd be ok with these until PG.  They are a little lower on the folic acid than you have listed though.

    Google Folic Acid, it is kind of the whole point of a prenatal. When I asked my doctor about prenatals he said I could keep taking my regular multi (until pg) but that I should just add folic acid. So I just finished up my huge bottle of daily's and added 1000mg of folic.

  • I have been taking the One a day prenatal vitamins..that has a multi and a prenatal vitamin in the box.  I see that its good so far...

    You should still take the pnv's for the folic acid.
