Preemies

neosure is making my baby not happy

I swear I think this formula is too heavy on her belly.  She can't burp and is so gassy, I don't know what to do anymore.  I asked the doctor if we could switch formula but she said to keep her on it because its best for her at this point.  She is now only eating an ounce at a time then falls asleep while I try to burp her.  I am so frustrated and TIRED.  There has got to be a less gassy formula out there for a preemie baby.

  • You poor thing.

Why does your doctor say she needs it? Is it just the extra calories? If so, perhaps you could use another formula but make it a little stronger than the can directions say.

I'd at least ask.. she's not getting the extra calories if she won't eat it, you know?

  • mine had a hard time with it too. ?"gripe water" helped, it's a herbal gas remedy. ?eventually they were switched to alimentum.
  • We had the same issue. We switched to Good Start when he was about 8 weeks. Ditto pp - you can mix any formula to be higher calorie, if that's why they need it. GS works much better for my son.
  • A didn't do well on neosure at all.  If your doc is just keeping her on it because of the extra calories, well, other formulas can be mixed to a higher calorie content.  Since your LO is so gassy, have you tried using Mylicon or Gripe Water?  That helped A out tremendously.  Ultimately though, we discovered she was allergic, so we had to switch to a hypoallergenic formula.  A's only real signs of the allergy were, gassiness, reflux, and obvious tummy aches.
  • DD's Dr. said to keep her on neosure until she was 9 months old but she was way too gassy and fussy.  We switched her to Similac Sensitive and just mix it to make higher calories.

  • I hated Neosure. I felt like it effected my son the same way. He was miserable. My dr. was really insisting that I do not switch and I stuck it out as long as I could... Finally I went and bought Enfacare by Enfamil (their preemie formula) and it changed everything!  It is still a higher calorie formula specifically made for preemies. I think it is 22 calories instead of 24 but you can mix it to increase calories. I just used it at 22 and my DS continued to gain weight fine. I did not even tell his dr and just switched - My son adjusted great - his poopy schedule was off a bit - but regulated fairly quickly. I wished I had done it sooner. You will even be amazed when you see the difference in the powder from Neosure to the others.... Good luck.
  • We were on Enfacare 22 as that was the formula being used at the NICU.  But we really noticed that my baby was gassy, had much reflux and was constipated.  We used mylicon for the gasiness.  But after almost a month of Enfacare at home (his 2nd month of birth age), our pedi switched us to Enfamil AR.  It's specifically to relieve reflux.  My baby did well on it.  And we didn't even have to mix it to make it higher calorie bcoz my DS still continued to gain minimum weight that the pedi wanted.
