Hi, I grew up in Livonia but have lived out of state since 1998. My DH and I are talking about moving back to MI to be closer to my family. I really love the general Birmingham area and would love any feedback on the area - schools, daycares, etc. I have a ton of questions but we are not ready to talk about this with family as it might take us a long time as DH needs to find a job and we have a house to sell. I work full time but can work from home so my job is not an issue but I will need daycare (we do a center now and love it). I would look into the Jewish Community Center daycare but what else is out there? Average costs? What school districts are better than others? I know things have changed since I last lived there. Thanks in advance.

Re: Might moving to MI
Birmingham is an amazing area! If you are looking for an area with a Jewish population, you should look at Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills, West Bloomfield, Commerce/Walled Lake area.
All have strong schools, but personally, I think that Birmingham and Bloomfield have the strongest districts.
The JCC's early childhood center is great......its in the West Bloomfield area, but there are a ton of wonderful Temples who have great preschool programs as well (and you don't have to be a member to send your kids to their schools.....). You might want to look into Temple Israel and Tempe Beth El's programs.......
A lot of the school districts have strong daycare/preschool programs as well (Birmingham and Bloomfield Hills have great ones!)
GL!
I live in the Plymouth-Canton area, right next to Livonia. Schools here are simply great! I love everything about my community: schools, diversity, the neighborhoods, a downtown area with nightlife and restaurants, good shopping, proximity to the airport, proximity to Ann Arbor, proximity to Detroit for sporting events, proximity to EMU/ U of M, I could go on. I really enjoy living here.
I would also recommend Ann Arbor, Northville and Novi. Those cities are close in proximity to Livonia and have good schools, shopping, and Jewish populations (if that's what you are looking for.) Ann Arbor is in the top 10 school districts in the state, I believe.
There's a great website for school information: schoolmatters.com
I'm in real estate so, legally, there are a lot of questions I can't answer about preferences, nationality, religion, etc. but I can send you in the direction of where to find the answers. I grew up in Farmington Hills, a highly Jewish populated area, and now live in Clawson, just east of Birmingham. I know quite a bit about all the areas in between and even west of this too. If I can answer more specific questions and you would like to talk one on one, feel free to email me at lauren@realestateone.com. I'd love to help you feel a bit more comfortable about your move.
Good luck!
