I asked for one at 38 weeks & was already about 2 cms, and 70% if I remember right. It was totally false hope though as I went 41w 1 d with DD. I was checked each week after that and they stripped my membranes a total of 3 times before labor actually started...
I didn't have any until I was actually in labor. As a general rule of thumb my midwife doesn't routinely do internals. I think that more and more health care providers are adopting that practice because I have a couple of friends who have used OBs who also don't do routine internals on pregnant women.
my OB does not do them unless you have PTL concerns, or are in labor... there really is no reason to do them otherwise- b/c you can be dilated/effaced for weeks on end - it doesn't really tell you anything.
Re: When did you have your first internal exam?

37 weeks.
I was 4cm & 80%. I delivered 3 days later.
