My husband can't get past the fact that he thinks Emerson sounds like a girl's name....but I just love it. My grandma is Emily and you could use the nn. Emme or Em, or even Emery.
In 2007, it was listed as #312 popularity for girls and #494 popularity for boys....so technically it is more popular for girls.
Can you help provide some positive reassurance on this name so I can show him? If you know Emersons...etc.
Re: Emerson for a girl?
Emerson was my #1 choice for a girl's name, but DH vetoed it. He said we weren't naming our kid after an appliance.
I still love it as a girl's name. I don't see it as a boy name, but then again I named my DD Addison which is a boy's name.
Did you mean that he thinks Emerson sounds like a BOY'S name?
I am not clear... but honestly I don't think of it as a girl's name at all. But I do recognize that a lot of people are using it for girls. There is a difference though.
Just like I know two girls named Ryan. They're adorable, sweet girls and I accept their names and the "new association" but Ryan is still a boy name, too.

I know a lot of Emersons. But it's their last name.
I would only every think of it as a boys name....especially since it ends in -son. Names that end in -son almost always mean son of....
I love it for a boy, but think it is an awful girls name.

I don't like Emerson for a girl. How about Emma?
My grandfather's mn was Emerson. After he died a few years ago, my cousin named his daughter Emerson Hunter. They call her Emmy. Our whole family is in the "what were they thinking?" mode. My cousin's wife has always been a tomboy with a girlie name, and so she wanted her daughter to have a non-girlie name.?
Every time the little girl is introduced, people do a double take like, "Is it a girlie boy with longish hair or is it a boyish girl?" I was once asked if he liked dressing like a girl.
If you do decide to use the name Emerson, please at least give your daughter a?distinctive,?feminine?middle name.?
You could do Emma or even Emer. ?Emer - Origin and Meaning of the name Emer at BabyNamesWorld

Emerson is a boys' name in my book. I don't like it for a girl at all. On your poll,?Jillian and Mallory are 1000x better.?

I don't like it for a girl name.
I think of Emerson Cod from Pushing Daisies (show's been cancelled, but it was still good).
The name is NMS but I do know a few Emerson's and they are girls. They go by Emmy.

I don't get why people think that if a name ends in SON it has to be a boy's name.
I've never met any men named Alison. Have you???
I know of 2 Emersons - Teri Hatcher's girl and Emerson Hart the lead singer of the band Tonic. If someone told me that they had named their newborn Emerson, I would think that they had a girl - I think that's the trend these days.
No. I sure haven't. I've always thought this was the one exception but since joining this board I've learned that even Allison originally meant "son of Alice." In the years to come, some of these other son names will be thought of as just a girl's name, too. Because why would people keep using them for their sons once there's millions of girls with the name? Still, they all mean "son of" something.
That's the thing. Everyone will say they only know girl Allisons. Just like many people only know girl Addisons and Emersons. I was just saying that the "son of" is a clue that the name was originally a boy name. Not denying that they're used for girls. And I don't personally care all that much.

Way to miss a point! Nobody was denying the fact that there are girls w/ the name. However, it doesn't change my mind that it is a boy name that is more frequently given to girls. And you are right Allison is considered a girl name, but I would never use it b/c it means Son of Alice.
If the latest craze was to name little girls Poophead and people knew tons of little girls with the name Poophead, would that be enough reason for me to name my daughter that? Nope. But if it's enough reason for others, then they should just go right ahead.
I automatically think "GIRL" for Emerson. It's funny you posted this b/c our neighbors had a boy and put a sign out with his name, weight, height, etc. and I was shocked that a boy was named Emerson. To me it is feminine. I just asked DH, and he said he thinks "boy"... hmm.
If you like it, I say go for it. We aren't too worried about gender-identity, though.

Everyone obviously has the right to use whatever name they want and I am actually not against unisex names. But this is where I feel sorry for parents of boys. To think you can name your son Ryan, Dylan, Addison or Emerson - and have people wonder if you have a girl! Seems unfair when these were all boy names first.

I've only heard it for girls probably because of the nicknames, as you mentioned.
I didn't miss a point - I was making one.
I know two Emersons that are both girls. I love the name! It is very classy and unique. Not to mention, they are both very beautiful girls.
One goes by Emmy for short.
Love the name!
