Bridesmaid Dress Question??

Hi everyone,

?? ?I just recently found out I was expecting the other day. I am a bridesmaid on labor day weekend in September and will be about 27 weeks pregnant (knock on wood!). I already ordered the dress at the beginning of march. What do I do?? Just get the dress and then make "alterations?" later?? It's an empire waist dress so it'll be good for pregnancy...but I was just wondering if I should tell the bride and maybe call the dress store. I just don't want to jinx anything but at the same time I don't want to pay for this dress and then have to pay for another one! Oy.

Re: Bridesmaid Dress Question??

  • Call asap and try to get them to order a size or two up instead. Then they can take in the top but leave out the bottom for the baby.

  • you could try calling the dress store directly & asking if you could change the size dress you ordered - they may or may not let you. if you're not ready to announce the news yet, then i would just hold off on telling the bride. if they won't allow you to change the size you ordered, i would ask if they could order some extra yards of fabric from the same dye lot as the dress in order to make alterations later eaiser. good luck.
  • I was a bridesmaid at 25 weeks.  I had ordered a dress 3 or 4 sizes too big then had it altered.  It really didn't need to be taken in much...  better to go too big than too small.

  • OK, trust me here. I used to work at David's Bridal and dealt with this all the time. Call asap, if the order has already been submitted you may be able to talk them into exchanging it for a few sizes up (get way bigger than you would imagining needing..even though it is empire waist).  You can always take it on, but can't always let it out. Keep in mind that once they place the order it often takes months for the dresses to show up. And by the time it gets here it might be too late to order a bigger size and still have it arrive in time. Best to ere on the side of caution and call asap.

    btw...where is the dress from?

  • I agree that you should call the dress store first.  Hopefully it isn't too late to change the size of your dress.  Then you can hold off on telling the bride until you are ready.  When you do tell her, things will already be taken care of and she won't have to worry.  If it is too late to change the size of the dress, you need to decide if you are investing in a new one or telling the bride that you will no longer be able to be a part of her bridal party.   If that is the case, I think you need to tell her ASAP.  But either way, at 27 weeks I think you will def. need a bigger size.  I'd go up at least 2-3 sizes and then have it altered in.  There typically isn't enough room in dresses to let them out more than an inch.
  • I'm having the same issue. ?I just called David's Bridal and they let me change the size to a a few sizes larger and I'm just planning on having it altered.

I totally agree. Definately tell the bride right away too. You don't want to wait til it's too late.

  • the same thing happened in my own wedding with a bridesmaid we ordered extra fabric and they put in a panel in the back and you couldn't even tell the difference

  • I called the place, Brides by Demetrios. They are going to try to call the factory to see if it's already been made and change the size...OR if it's too late they are goingto order extra fabric:) What fun...oy. Thanks for all the suggestions!
