What food coloring to use to make orange frosting?

I can't think.  What makes orange?  red and yellow?

Re: What food coloring to use to make orange frosting?

  • Yes it's red & yellow--the box used to say how many drops of each makes certain colors.

  • yep - red and yellow.
Nobody said life would be easy, they just promised it would be worth it.

  • Yes, red & yellow, but the drops is going to take a LOT of red to make it a true orange.  I highly recommend the Gel Food Color you can find at Michaels.  Is it Winton the brand?

  • Hehehe you reminded me of a cute story...

I was having problems learning my secondary colors. My grandmother used ketchup & mustard to teach me that red & yellow make orange. Then she gave me hotdogs for lunch to enjoy it. :)

Close!  It is Wilton.  The gel coloring is better, imo, because you use much less (and thus don't get the taste) and it doesn't mess with the consistency of your icing.  And they have several shades of orange, too!

  • Thanks everyone!

    Basketball cupcakes, here we come!

  • You just got my mind racing with possibilities for displaying them.

Home Improvement stores sell those Linoleum Tiles, one of them looks like a Parque (sp) floor - just like a BBall Court.  You could peel & stick some of them to a flat of cardboard or plywood then mark the court lines with different colors of electrical or painters tape.

    Adorable theme Rachel!

Thanks for the ideas!  We are having a bunch of people over for the Final Four on Saturday.
