Babies: 0 - 3 Months

can colic start at 5 weeks?

My darling baby, who has had her bouts of fussiness but nothing major, SCREAMED for 3 hours straight tonight. No real reason, not hungry, not sick (as far as I could tell) but she was totally miserable. She finally fell asleep from sheer exhaustion...

any ideas what this could be and how to avoid it in the future!?!

"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut

Re: can colic start at 5 weeks?

  • maybe 6 week growth spurt is nearing?  Couuld just be the 'witching hour' of fussiness starting, which i guess can be colic.  some help i am lol
  • Gas maybe?  Overly exhausted and won't give in?

Colic can start at 5 weeks though but they say it follows a rule of three.  Three hours a night at least, three nights a week or more,  for 3 weeks or more.  I hope this isn't the case for you.  If it does continue though, we use this stuff called Cocyntal that you can get at Whole Foods for colic.  It has worked wonders with his colic issues and makes our evenings much easier, though nowhere near perfect.

  • Even most regular babies get super-fussy around 6 weeks.  Regular babies usually get over it after a week or two but colicky babies keep going and going...  No one knows why they get fussy.

My advice is to vent on The Bump to keep your sanity and do whatever you can to sooth your baby to sleep.  Different things work for different people and even if you do nothing, your baby will mature and grow out of it.  Hugs.  Even if it's not "real" colic it can still be really stressful.

  • I agree with pp about it being the fussy period for regular babies- it's from 6 to 8 weeks.  Hopefully it's not colic because DS has colic and it sucks.
