If you can't paint

What can you do if you are in an apartment and not allowed paint?  Actually I'm not sure-we may be able to but won't be living here for all that long so dont want to bother.  But obviously I do care some...

AND the walls are stark white.

I thought about hanging a quilt on one wall.  I've heard of wallpaper that you can pull off with no damage later but it seems hard to find and is probably expensive.  It may be possible to staple fabric to the wall....but just wanted to see if anyone had any other ideas to give the walls some needed punch.

Re: If you can't paint

  • Quilt is a great idea.  Will you have bookshelves?  You can really dress those up...

There's always mounted shelves too and picture frames/canvases.  Accessorize.  Use different colors throughout the room.  Bring your attention away from the walls by giving your visitors other things to look at.

Some use decals but I usually end up hating them, especially if they just look like stickers of characters placed randomly on the wall.  I do like the large tree ones if it actually goes with the room...

Some landlords let you paint...but only if you repaint back to white before you leave.  You can always ask, never hurts.  If you have a copy of the lease it should say it in there.

  • We live in an apartment and don't want to paint. We won't/shouldn't be here long enough to bother. So we got decals. They came out pretty good and are really easy to get off.

  • When I was a renter, I kind of viewed the damage deposit as a "creativity fee"....

Decals work really well, and most sign shops can even custom make vinyl decals for you if you can't find ones you like.

    Very Cute!!

  • Thanks girls.  We will have bookshelves so that will add height and interest.  Otherwise I can probably do a combination of suggestions-like maybe one fabric accent wall or something.  I do like those decal trees.  Thank you for the suggestions.

I totally agree about the "creativity fee."  We actually don't even have a deposit but we just won't be here that long and husband already booed the idea of painting.  hmmmm but maybe just one wall....
