I didn't think they were anything. I'm making a piece of jewelry for my foster daughter and saw that some of the silver blanks had notches and some didn't. Just wondering what the difference was.
Oh, I thought you were wondering about the history of a set of military dogtags or something -- there are a bunch of urban legends about the purpose of the notches on old dogtags. But the truth is before the 1970s the embossing machines that were used required the notch to keep the dogtag in place. The newer machines don't, so current dogtags don't have the notch.

The notches held the dogtags on the embossing machine. Military dogtags made up until the 1970's had notches. They don't mean anything.
