We started with a travel pillow. I also had an older throw pillow that was pretty flat. I put it in a pillowcase. When it was time for a real pillow, I found one that had already been used in our house and handed it down to DD/DS then bought a new one to replace it for the person who had used it or for the guest room. Reasoning:
1. a "used" pillow is flatter and more compacted - better for a toddler
2. I figured my kids had a higher chance than an adult of sweating, bleeding, snotting, peeing, or barfing on their pillow. Why provide a brand new pillow for them to ruin, when I could at least get some mileage out of the pillow by letting another family member use it for a while!
