Most Random Poll Ever...

Which way do you put your silverware in the dishwasher? My parents do it one way and I do it the opposite way, though I can't remember which way they did it growing up, but I'm pretty sure it's not the way they do it now....

I put mine w/ the handle at the top (tines down on a fork) which I thought was "normal" until I just looked at the dishwasher at work... lol

Now curiosity has the best of me. It seems gross on both accounts to do it the other way to me. Touching clean silverware when you unload and touching dirty loading. But maybe I'm the odd one...

  • If its a sharp knife, handle up.

Otherwise, I just toss 'em  in.

  • I wish I had a dishwasher!! Growing up, I put the silverware in so that the handles faced up, not the tines, spoon-part, etc.
  • i see your point about touching them, my mom always said when i was growing up that they wouldn't get as clean if the handles were up and the part you eat off down at the bottom.

I see her point because sometimes I find gunk down at the bottom of the tray thing

  • I don't use the dishwasher to clean the dishes ever but I do use it to drip dry.  I always place handle down unless its a knife.
  • What about us type B people that are just happy that the silverware is in the dishwasher?  Some are up, some are down...

  • I put the handles down because I think it gets them cleaner. Unless it's a sharp knife, then handle up.

LOL So true some days, er, most days!

I guess I just always GRAB silverware by the handle when I am doing the dishes, so I naturally put them in as such instead of fooling w/ turning them or grabbing the tine, spoon, etc. part.

I think that the handles should be down because they will clean better that way but I always put them handle up because I don't want anyone to touch clean silverware while putting them away.
  • Knives are always down but we put some up and down...that way everything gets clean!

  • i do both. but have wondered which is 'better' too. ha ha. but in never put good/sharp knives in the dishwasher- dishwasher isn't good for them
  • I dont want to touch the icky stuff on the end of the silverware, so i put it handle up.  Also, dont want to fall on the rack and get knives and forks in my butt!

  • We put ours handle up and there is no problem with getting them clean. Plus we always rinse off before they hit the diswasher too. Very interesting poll!

  • I put the handle down for spoons. I convinced myself that stuff will settle in a spoon and not get cleaned real good. Who knows.

    Very interesting poll!

Gotta keep it going around here.. you know, fork polls AND religious polls ;)

  • How funny that the poll is 50/50!

We always did it tines down (handle up) when I was growing up.

But then my parents got a new dishwasher where you're supposed to put each piece of silverware in it's own little slot in the silverware basket, so they started doing tines up (and handle down) for everything except for sharp knives.

It annoyed me, and I kept doing it my way, until I recently got a new dishwasher with the same little plastic pieces in the silverware basket.

I think that handle down (tines up) makes more sense.  Your silverware is more likely to get clean if you have the dirty parts up and exposed to more water.  Also, with the little separaters in the silverware basket, everything is pretty separated.  I think it gets much cleaner!

  • all handles up so that when i grab the silverware to put it awat, i am not touching the "eating end" of the silverware
  • I LOVE this poll!!!!!  For me it is handle down...I have a system. The bowls have to be a certain way, silverware has to be a certain way, plates etc.  Drives me crazy (I am so type A!!!!) when my hubby just throws them in there.

On the other hand I am most of the time just thankful when he actually does them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Whoops!!! I meant handle up. Handle up!!!!!
  • I do handle on top.  I don't want to stab myself with a knife or fork.
