MIL wants me to start registering....

We are going with MIL's family for a week on the beach to celebrate the grandparents' 80th birthdays. While there, I had made mention, that it would be nice to throw BIL's wife a shower (since none of MIL's family would be able to get up north for one).

Well now it's a double shower and MIL wants me to register for somethings before then. Even when we go, I'll only be 18 weeks. I just feel like that's way too earlier to be tempting fate.

Anyone else think that?

  • I wouldn't say "tempting fate" but I do think that 4 1/2 months is a little early to have a shower.   How far along is your BIL's wife?  I'd try to let it be all about her.. there's lots of time for you to get together again .. maybe over the summer?

  • Honestly, I don't believe in the whole "tempting fate" thing. I say register if you want something that is your taste. If you don't feel comfortable registering, be prepared for stuff that may not be your taste! If something, god forbid, did happen, and you had registered, I think you would have a much easier time returning it.
  • Confession: I started our registry like 2 weeks ago. There isn't much on it, but I'm slowly researching out all our options/preferences and have been adding things to the list as I decide I want them. That's pretty early, but if it's convenient and your BIL's wife doesn't care, I'd go for it. However, if I was BIL's wife, I'd probably be a little hurt.
  • BIL's wife didn't even know we were going to do a shower, and she's having 4 other showers: I wanted it to be a surprise for her, but MIL wants to include me too (she'll be 7 months). DH has 3 aunts (that's the only family), who all live in FL, that we know couldn't make it...so as my MIL calls is "it's more a sprinkle, than a shower".

  • I love the "sprinkle" thing!  That's super cute!
  • I registered around 18w because we were thinking my shower was going to be early.  I was told by my doctor that I couldn't travel long distances after 28w and my SIL was expecting her baby around then, so it was all scheduling around those things.

So, no I don't think that's too early.  We bought our car seats and stroller when I was only 11w because they were discontinuing the style I wanted and they only had a few left in stock!
