Labor and Delivery pain medicine options?

I am not pg yet but when it happens I have an extremely severe fear of pain and needles.

I wonder if when someone goes into labor there is any option for taking a pill of some sort to relax a bit before getting any needles?  I'm thinking the answer is no, but if by some slim chance it is yes it would be a godsend to me!

  • If you get pregnant, unless you decline all the testing and such, you'll have to get used to needles. I'm not sure if there is a pill for that or not, but you'll probably have to have an IV.

  • I hated them.  Still do.  But you do just have to get over it.  Whether it is the needles from all the tests at the ob office, or the IV in labor and delivery that takes 4 times to get right like mine did, you get over it.

  • I also am extremely fearfull of needles. I usually pass out. You do have to get several blood tests, and shots.  As for delivery I had quite a bit of needles/ivs.  Just put it out of your mind. Let the technician know of your fear and do your best.  I passed out through a few blood tests... but they are used to that sort of thing.  You'll do fine.. plus the baby is worth it.

Yep, I guess I should have thought about this a llittle more.  I will have to deal with needles way before delivery.

  • Honestly, I was so keyed up due to getting to meet my daughter soon ("being pregnant" is a whole different mindset from "having a baby-now!!") that I never felt the needles during L&D.  I was a little nervous about the needle to the back should I decide to get an epi, but it turned out to be really not a big deal.  The only "problem" was that the IV started to get a little sore after a while, but I don't think a pill first like you are asking about would help that.

And like pp said, you will be stuck many, many times during your pregnancy so hopefully that will help you get over your fear somewhat.

If you are afraid of pain and needles, then you are in for a big shock with pregnancy.  I got stuck more times when pregnant than I can count.  And don't even get me started on spinal that took 15 minutes for them to administer.

  • And then, once your LO arrives, you have to deal with them getting poked and prodded too :-(.  That's even harder ~ I'd take all the shots for her if I could.
