Help please! Fiber for toddler?

This is way TMI, but lsat night DS really really strained while trying to get his poop out, and when he was done and we changed him, it was really really hard (poor guy).  What should we feed him to get more fiber into him so that he doesn't have to deal with that again?  He isn't so great at eating veggies, but he does eat a lot of fruit.  We eat all whole grain/whole wheat/whole whatever bread.  I feel terrible, so I'm hoping that someone can give me some more ideas to make it better.  THANKS!

Re: Help please! Fiber for toddler?

  • I found out last night that ds really likes the individually wrapped dried prunes.  I needed them for *ahem* myself and he was all over me wanting some.  He kept coming back for more.

  • We had the same issue with our ds. He loves fruit but no veggies.  He now eats cereal...Special K with strawberries, or sometimes mini-frosted miniwheats.

My pedi gave me a list of high-fiber foods.  high fiber fruits are: fresh pears, blueberries, apples, bananas

I cut back on his apple juice too...he only drinks clear liquids..with one sippy of milk in the morning.

The best thing that I found was "high fiber pop-tarts"! He loves them.

Pedi said the general rule of how many grams of fiber a day that a child needs is by taking their age and adding five to it.  So, my ds is 3 and then plus 5= eight grams/day

The pop tarts alone has 5 grams total!

Also, another helpful tip is that he can't have any foods with 0 grams of fiber...cookies, etc. Just read the labels!

Another great snack..whole wheat ritz crackers!

My ds is also on Miralax as prescribed by pedi. Might check into that.

    Sorry to ramble...hope this helps!

  • My pedi recommended 2 oz a day of pear or prune juice if he was constipated (and assuminig had a balanced diet). He was constipated once and the tiniest bit of prune juice worked miracles right away.

  • I would try giving him prunes prune juice.  You could mix the juice into other drinks if he won't take it by itself.  Also, I would try mixing veggies into other things that he eats if you can.  Maybe give him veggie sticks and a dipping sauce as well......
  • Our ped put DD on miralax to help get everything moving.  She also said to watch how much dairy we give her since cheese and milk can be constipating.  Bananas are also very constipating so we limit those.  DD's favorite snack is the Fiber One yogurt.  She has one of these a day and it seems to be doing the job.
  • Thanks everyone!  I'm going to have to check out the dried prunes.  He loves the blueberries and pears, so we'll keep giving him that.  He is getting better at the veggies when he has "sauce" to dip it in, but more often than not he will just use it as a stick to get the "sauce" to eat all the dip/dressing/hummus/whatever we have there and leave the veggie.
