Enrolling in kindergarten. Question.

Yesterday I went to enroll DS in K.  I went in with all documentation/forms/etc.  His shot record says he's up to date until 7/20/09 which is his 5th birthday...then he'll get his boosters.  They can't accept his enrollment until then.  The woman told me they might not even be there that late in the summer so I need to call each day to see if they're there.

Has anyone else ever dealth with this?  I mean, clearly he's up to date and clearly he can't get his boosters till July.

Re: Enrolling in kindergarten. Question.

  • hmmmmm...maybe call your doctor to see if they do them early??

I mean, kids turn 5 AFTER school starts, right?  At least here they do, the cut-off is October 15th.  So they can't really expect people to not enroll their kid until after then.  And maybe the boosters can happen before they turn 5.  I know I had a "physical" before school started...I don't know...

  • Maybe you could get a Dr's note? That seems like a huge hassle to have to wait to enroll him. Think of how many kids must have the same situation. Weird.
  • I am a school nurse in Indiana so our laws might be different from where you are but I am thinking that whoever gave you the information was not correct.  I can not refuse to enroll a student because they are not up to date I can only exclude them if they do not comply with state laws after the school year starts.  Do not get the shots early because then they are considered invalid and will not count toward school requirements.  I am sure you are not the only one who has a birthday between early registration and start of school so I think you just need to speak with another person.  Every school has the right to set up their own system of enrolling the kids and when they will take the info but making you wait will just make things harder on them in the fall.  Technically for a preschool aged child your child would be up to date and could be enrolled in a school based preschool.

  • The cutoff here is sept 1 but school started on august 18th. DS turned 5 august 22nd. We had the shots done early but as far as I understood there was supposed to be someone in the school office until school started. If I were you I would call back and speak to someone else and find out if there will be someone there. Sounds like the woman didn't know what she was talking about to me. JMO.
  • That's what Alissa's records say as well "up to date until 9/10/09" We haven't had any issues. Her 5yr check up is actually on 8/4/09. I mean, obviously she would turn 5 after school starts, but when we went to kindergarten round up, they told us "Just send over the updates when you have them!!" and there was no problem w/ any of the kids being enrolled.

Is doing the shots early not an option at your pedi's? At Alissa's 4yr checkup, they said that we could get her 5 yr shots done whenever we wanted, because I guess there are quite a few and we could choose to do some early so they would be spaced out on her.
