Ways to "fatten up" 1 yr old????

We were at the baby's one year check up today and the doctor is concerned about his weight.  He is 16lb10oz and in the 4th percentile for his age (45% for heigh).  He only gained 1oz from 10 to 12 months and 4oz from 6 to 10 months.  He was 6lb12oz when he was born.  My oldest was always the oposite with weight never being a problem (8lb10oz at birth, 14lb by 4 months, 20 by 6 months and now 28 at 2.5yrs) so this is new to me.

My son eats like crazy!  He's on whole milk and off of formula and baby food.  He eats 3 table meals per day and loves carbs.  He occassionally has one snack during the day as well.  He drinks 16-20oz of milk per day.  He has no diet restrictions (other than the normal peanut products).

The pedi suggested pediasure "if I want."  We have to go back to the office in one month for a weight check.  He is still in 6-9 month clothes which sometimes are still big on him (especially the pants but 3-6 month are too short).

TIA!
Heather

  • Will he eat avacado? It's a very healthy kind of fat and I have heard it is recomended for underweight or smaller babies to help fatten up. Try whole fat yogurt popsicles and puree some fruit in with it (might even be able to add some sweet veggie) they love the popsicles and will eat loads of them. Did pedi say anything about maybe giving him some formula again, at least part of the time? The Go and grow stuff maybe? I looked this up and maybe itwill help. It has some really good tips.

  • This sounds exactly like DS.  He is now 2 and still can fit into 9-12 month clothes!!  He is super tall and skinny.  He is now in the 5th percentile for weight and 95th for height.  At his one year check up, the dr. recommended avocados because it is a really healthy fat.  I know it's tough when they are that little, but as long as he is healthy, try not to worry too much!

  • lots of whole fat yogurt 2-3 a day.   avacado.  can you try the PB?  That put a ton of weight on my DS.

I would also try and work in a 2nd snack.  Lots of meat products, chicken, beef, steak.

My DS did the same thing, was 90% for weight, and dropped to 30%.  but after 4 PB sandwiches a week, 3 yogurts a day, lots of pizza, he is back up to 45% for weight.

I would also go in for weight checks.  I had to do this with DS, I know it is a pain, but worth it because you can discuss with the dr.

  • I'm right there with you. Kayson barely weighs 20lbs @ 18 months and has recently lost weight due to being sick. We're now seeing a dietician and also have been reccomended pdiasure. He eats ALL DAY long when well. I'm so tired of trying to pack in all these extra calories, and not see a difference in weight gain.
  • Ripe avacado plain, sweet potatoes, add butter (real) to veggies, whole fat yogurt (I think the Dora and Diego ones are not low fat), fruit juice, and Pediasure.  Bananas are also high in calories.
  • another thing to try if you don't want to/can't do PB yet is sunbutter (like PB but made from sunflower seeds).  It has lots of the good fat in it.  My DD loves it.
