How long does your LO nurse

DD is a month old and it is taking 40-60 mins. each time she nurses.  How long will this last?  I also have a 3 year old and an hour at a time just is not working.  BTW she sucks down a bottle in no time.

Thanks

Re: How long does your LO nurse

  • DS nurses for about 20 min (10 each side).  He's been doing this since birth pretty much.  I feel sorry for you and your boobs. :(

  • DD nurses for about 10 minutes...5 on each side. She has always been this way. I think I have an over supply of milk though and she eats all she needs too quickly...this comes with its own issues though.

  • DS was the same way but  has gotten way more effecient 15-20 minutes. It just takes time..hang in there!!
  • max is 15 minutes on one side. Usually the first side is always longer then the second.

Becareful your LO isn't just using you as a pacifier. I catch my DD doing that and I stop her.

  • At 1-month, probably 35-45 minutes.  He wasn't very proficient, but it's getting better.  The good thing is, you can be somewhat confident that her suckling is stimulating your milk supply.  Even if she's not draining the breast fully.
  • I agree with PP... I pay attention to when DS is actually nursing and when he is just using me as a pacifier... his sucking patterns are different depending on which he is doing.

He usually nurses about 10-15 minutes on each side.

  • My baby took an hour or more to nurse until she was around 2 months old.  At that point, she drastically cut back on both the number of nursing sessions and the length of each session.  See if you can stick it out another month and it will probably get better.  I imagine it is difficult with a 3 year old to run after!

  • Jude takes 40-60 minutes, but he does this with a bottle as well.
  • Lately I havent been timing feedings.  I just let her eat.  When she doesnt want any more, she should push your nipple away with her tongue.  At least thats what my DD does.OH yea she will suck a bottle down in no time, it's easy to get the milk out.
