Do you like velcro or snaps better? Velcro is easier with a wriggling baby, IMO
Do I need to use rubber cover with them?? You don't need a rubber cover, but some diapers do need a waterproof cover. It depends on the type of diaper.
What's your favorite brand? I like prefolds and Thirsties covers. I have used Bum Genius and I like them but I just don't think they are worth the price. It is good to have a few pocket diapers or AIOs around for sitters to use or to use when you are out and about, but I still think prefolds are better in general.
Big sister {September 2008} Sweet boy {April 2011} Fuzzy Bundle {ETA July 2014}
Do you like velcro or snaps better?I like both equally.
Do I need to use rubber cover with them?? You need to use a diaper cover with prefolds, fitteds and contours.
What's your favorite brand? Green Mountain Diaper for prefolds. Thirsties and fleece Sugar Peas for diaper covers. I have one bumGenius 3.0, and I'm really liking it, so I'm going to start building a small stash of those. Kissaluvs are a great fitted diaper for the newborn stage.
My kiddo isn't here yet, but I've done tons of research and have stalked the Eco Friendly Family board since it's start.
People like velcro and snaps for different reasons. The best idea is to get a few of both and see what you like best.
If you're thinking of CD'ing a newborn, Kissaluvs Size 0 (KL0) and prefolds (PF) are the most recommended. In terms of a rubber cover, there are covers that go over the KL0 and PF. I think the mostrecommended ones for newborns are Thirsties XS.
Sunshine diapers and Jillians Drawers also have infant trials where you get a ton of various diapers to try out. It's a great way to see what's out there without investing.
I have purchased the following:
-6 Thirsties XS covers -24 Greenmountain Diapers unbleached indian prefolds in orange edge -12 GMD unbleached indian prefolds in periwinkle edge -18 KL0 -12 Bum Genius 3.0 for once the kid is over 12 lbs.
- depends on the diaper. Fitted and prefolds you need a cover. AIO (all in ones) or pockets you don't need seperate cover
- when DD was newborn until about 12-13 pounds we used KLO's (kissaluv's size 0 which is a fitted) with prorap covers, we also used prefolds (green mountain prefolds) with thirsti covers. We had some transitional fitted all in one diapers (size small) from etsy (katnappie was the seller). Now we are using BG (bum genius) exclusively which is an AIO one size diaper (size adjusts as baby grows). She's wearing her pink BG in my siggy pic.
We have the kissaluvs trial from Nell's Natural Baby with thirsties xs covers. The kissaluvs have snaps, which are sometimes hard to do when she's really wiggly and kicking, but overall we like them a lot.
We used Kissaluvs w/Thirsties covers for the first 10 weeks. We also used some prefolds. Around 5.5 weeks, we started using our Bum Genius pocket diapers. Now that our DD is a wiggle worm, I prefer the velcro. It's also easy for our daycare staff to use. Down the road, I might wish I had snaps, but our BGs are holding up well for now.
We have 30 BGs in rotation. With the pocket and all-in-one diapers, you do not need an extra cover.

Like Iris I use prefolds and thirsties covers. I have a few bummis covers and they are pretty good too.
