30k service for my car?

i literally chocked on my coffee when he told me how much it was going to cost! dear lord that is INSANE. 640$ and two hours just to keep my car under warranty (it has to be done by a dealership or certified location)
ETA: they did offer me a free loaner car for the day, but i'll have to move my ginormous hard to install car seat over or wait for the car (with DD) for 2 hours. I'm negotiating with DH right now to pick us up.

Yes, I know.  It's AWFUL.  My mom's 40k service on her VW was nearly $1500.  Aw-full.

Ugh!  I'm sorry!  Now I'm really dreading my 30k service.  Hopefully the next 2k miles creep by slowly.

We just had ours done and it was about the same price. I hate dropping so much money like that, but I am hoping by taking care of it, the car is going to last us for quite awhile.

that's one of the reasons we sold our vw. ?the 70k service was super spendy.

VW service isn't cheap. My DH is a service writer at a VW dealership. He has many people spit out their coffee and scream and yell at him too when they hear how expensive her bill is.

the good news: both the subaru (my car) and the VW (DH's car) are both paid off this month...

the bad news: the cost of this farking service is 2x what my monthly car payment was! so i guess in the end its still a break even month... 

 

*sigh* 

even better news: i may get to take DD out for panera, Toy's R Us (to sneer at the toys but look at the books) and play in Pier One! (its all within walking distance of the dealership since we may not have a ride home till the car is done)

What kind of car do you have? Is that the dealer only thing a line they are giving you or is it really true? I'm not doubting you, just wondering if you've been fed a line. What constitutes a certified shop? You might be able to save a bundle by going elsewhere. With our cars, doing the work ourselves keeps the car under warranty provided it is done properly and we document it properly with supply receipts, mileage log, etc..

Sorry you had such sticker shock. I hate that feeling!

i talked to Subaru (of America) directly and in order for my car to be covered under the manufacturers original warranty the 30K service must be done. Basically it checks to make sure the car is wearing properly and no manufacturing defects are occurring. Its not just a random service call or anything, and the reason it has to be a certified Subaru shop is because its checking for manufacturing defects. Its the first major service call (and one of the only ones) that Subaru recommends. I could NOT have it done, but if anything comes up that could possibly be covered under the original manufacturer's warranty, it won't be, because we didn't have it inspected at 30k to possibly detect those problems. Thankfully like i said, its the only service that is required for the manufacturers warranty to stay valid. the other ones (60K etc are a "line" from the dealership as most of my car's original warranties expire around 60K anyway)

neither DH nor I have any idea about cars (i can add oil, washer fluid, and other basic stuff) but changing belts, flushing fluids and things like that are WAY above our heads and would definitely not be recommended (considering we wouldn't even have a place to do this as we only have street parking)  and all of our friends are "tech geeks" so great with computers = not so much with cars.

 

its just something we understand has to be done... it was the cost of it that kinda got me... i was thinking 400 at the most... not in the 600's.
