When did you start with Mat clothes

I'm only 8 weeks and I know this is just bloat but my pants are all tight! To be honest, they were getting tight before I got pregnant!!

Just curious as to what the norm or average was for starting to wear maternity clothes.  I feel like I need to pick up some sweaters or something one size up since my chest is so swollen - I can't wear a lot of them to work - totally inappropriate!

Re: When did you start with Mat clothes

  • I think I started wearing them around 8-10 weeks, can't remember. I say if you feel like you are popping out of your clothes then it's a good time to start:) If you have a Ross in your area they have some pretty good things for not a lot of $!

Although things felt snug a bit sooner, I didn't actually need maternity clothes until 18 - 20 weeks. For reference, I am already heavy so I think that allowed me to delay a bit longer.
  • I started with maternity pants at 13 weeks. Do you have a bella band? I began with one of those at 9 weeks and this helped relieve the pressure and tightness.

  • With pg#1 around 8-9 weeks, I had twins and was super bloated. This time not until 20-21 weeks.

  • I was in maternity pants full time at 9wks.  Granted, some of it may have been due to bloating that early on, but the bloat was quickly replaced by a true bump.

I started wearing a few maternity shirts/sweaters around 10-12wks, but not all the time right away.  I don't remember when I went full time on the tops.

If you aren't comfortable, or not even work appropriate, I'd definitely get a couple of essentials to get your collection started.

  • Do it early!  I waited b/c I didn't think I looked pg enough AND I was hoping to look "cute" for longer.  BUT, I felt like a new person when I started wearing mat. pants - it felt so good!!!
  • My bloat too was out of control early on. Not enough that people could tell but enough i was uncomfortable in my clothes. My mom bought me some maternity pants for my birthday when I was 7 weeks. And at that point my big tummy didn't push them down, and I was so much more comfy. I was able to pull of my regular shirts for a while, until like 14 weeks. I also got a pair of pants at Ross for like 9 dollars one size bigger than normal and those worked for a while too.

So I say, if you are uncomfortable, get some new clothes. :)

  • I can't remember when I actually started wearing them but I have to say that the bella bands were a life saver.  I wore them with regular pants for well into my second trimester.  I would highly recommend getting one and trying it out--it was just the relief I needed!

  • I think I'm in the minority, I really don't care for the bella band. I wore it a few times around 7-8 weeks and it just doesn't work for me as well as I hoped. I started wearing mat pants on and off around 9 weeks and this is my first full week in them (almost 11 weeks). I'm still wearing my normal shirts full-time, but I've had to put away all of my button-down tops. I just ordered a bunch of mat shirts and a sundress from Old Navy b/c we're going on vacation to Florida next week and I refuse to buy new summer clothes that aren't maternity. But really, for most of the clothes, you can't tell they're maternity anyway.
  • I had a few pairs of pants that were 2 sizes bigger than my normal size so I wore those and rubberbands to extend. I wore my first pair of maternity pants today (15w5d)

ETA: I am still in a few pairs of regular pants (few sizes up) and regular tops. I think most maternity tops are still too big and seem to hang on me. I tried the Target Bee Band and did not like it at all. I wore it twice but preferred the rubberband.
