Disappointed in CD's (help)

I only cloth diaper 1/4 of time.  I only have 5 right now because I did the Jillian's drawers trial and only kept the BG all-in-one, one-size and a fuzzi bunz all in one.  I wasn't really crazy about the rest and planned on ordering more BG AIO, OS's once DD gained some weight.  My mother also bought me 3 BG AIO's w/inserts prior to me giving birth. Now, they all leak poops & pees.  I am disappointed and thinking I might not order anymore and not cloth diaper.  I followed all of the pre-washing instructions and DD is proably about 11 lbs by now, so I'm thinking they should work.

Any tips or can you convince me otherwise or suggest a different diaper?

I'm feeling pretty guilty and I really wanted to do this, but if I'm gonna have to change her cloths everytime I change her diaper, it isn't worth it to me financially or environmentally.  Help!

Thanks for you time!

  • BG's didn't work for DS until he was 12 lbs at least.  So it may be a size issue still.  Are you using a cloth diaper friendly detergent?  Check out www.pinstripesandpolkadots.com if you're not sure - they have a good list.  Are you using any diaper creams with the cloth, and if so, is it CD safe (same website has a good list).  If not, it might be a repelling issue - are the diapers/inserts pretty soaked when you change her?  You could try squirting some water on one of the diapers to see if it absorbs it easily/farily quickly.

Fitteds worked really well for us when DS was smaller, and continue to be our go-to nighttime diaper.  Maybe try a fitted or two?  You do need covers with them.  Our favorite are B4's (bububebe), but there are definitely cheaper options - of course, it sounds like you did try the thristies fab fitted and/or maybe a kissaluv with the trial(?).  Any particular reason those weren't your cup of tea?

  • Don't give up! Where are they leaking? If its out the legs or up the back, they might just not be tight enough. Pull them tighter on your DC. I had that problem when I first started CDing. If its through the outer PUL layer either they are saturated and you need a more absorbent insert or you need to change DC more often. I would bet a more absorbent insert would work. But this would only help if your inserts are saturated, if they are dry and DC is leaking then maybe they are repelling and you have buildup and need to strip the diapers. Good luck!
  • If they are leaking both poop and pee, I'm going to guess that they aren't on tight enough and they could also be repelling.

I actually switched to cloth because of blowouts with disposables.  I haven't had a problem since switching.

I would try doing a couple of hot washes w/out detergent (if they are already clean) to see if maybe it's some extra rinses that are needed and then just make sure that they are on good and snug.

  • i am wondering if maybe you have detergent or fabric softener build-up which is makign your CD's repel?

just wanted to add that we've tried 3 kinds of pockets, and none seem to work for DS. they leak at the legs most every time. Fitteds however work 100% for us. Sposies leak poo up the back 90% of the time on him...

    don't give up yet!

  • I too couldn't get the BG to work until DD was 12 lbs.  The FB pockets are just starting to work the past couple of weeks and she is over 13 lbs.  Before they looked as though they fit, but would occasionally still leak.

One thing I have found with my DH stuffing these diapers is that if the liner is bunched up, the diaper will leak.  I have had to teach him how to make sure the liner is completely smooth, snapped down so it's not bunched to fit in there, etc.

And what I have learned with my mom is that you won't hurt the baby by having the diaper snug around his/her legs and tummy.  She kept dealing with leaks when sitting and I realized one time when changing her after a visit that she doesn't put the diaper on tight enough.  Snug is good, and you can angle the aplix a bit to get a more custom fit on the legs.

Finally, another fitted fan here.  We are just starting to like the pockets, but have always loved fitteds and covers.  Never have a leak issue and can still customize the amount of absorbency.
