Maternity leave poll

Just curious who is taking the 1 yr mat leave, who may be splitting it with their DH/SO?  Or are you a SAHM?

We are doing 7 mths for me & 5 mths for DH.  But I am actually extending my leave for 8 mths total as I am taking 4 wks of holiday so we will have 1 mth all together in May!

Time sure is flying though -- ughh!

Re: Maternity leave poll

  • I am taking the 1 year mat leave as DH is a self-employed tradesman and does not qualify for parental leave as he does not pay into EI.?

My year is up after July 1st and I am wondering where the last year went. One day I could hold her head in my hand and the next day she's talking and in the starting stages of crawling...?

  • I am taking the full year.  My DH is a teacher, and Sophie was born in the middle of summer so he had the opportunity to spend a few weeks at home with her before he had to go back to school.  And we will have all of July with both of us home so that will be nice.

  • I'm taking the full year, my dh took 4+ weeks off as well when she was born but took it unpaid. I will not be returning to work once my year is up. Trying to get some freelancing work from my old company.

  • I am taking the full year.  Like Boobitz's H, he doesn't pay in to EI there for doesn't have the option.  I am probably not going back either.  I am asking for a LOA and I am pretty confident they will give it to me.

They have done layoffs and people aren't getting their hours in so they wouldn't really have work for me anyway.  If I happen to get PG again before June 1 then I will go back and work the 16 weeks to qualify for mat leave again.

  • I am taking the full year. I had 4 weeks of vacation that I took prior to DD being born b/c I wasn't feeling well. DH had some time off when she was born and in the new year.

I have not decided if I will be returning to work, I have a lot to think about!

  • I'm taking the full year.  He took 1 week as holidays when A was born.  We will split parental leave with DC#2 though.  I had a c/s the first time around and although ideally I would like to VBAC, if I have to have a repeat c/s, I won't be able to take care of DS while recovering.

  • I'm taking the full year, and then only going back to supply teaching 2 days a week, and teaching dance in the evenings so I can stay home with DD most of the time.

DH is a teacher too, and with DD being born the Monday before the winter break, he was home with me for 3 weeks (which was awesome).

He enjoyed March Break at home with us, and we'll have the summer together too before he heads back to work.

    Works out nicely.

  • With DS I took the full 1 year Mat leave, but due to childcare issues for both of the kids, I will only be taking 6 months for this baby.
  • I took the full year mat leave myself.  I am returning to work full time in May.  :(  I wish I only had to go back part time, but it just won't be happening.  I'm not looking forward to leaving DS all day.
  • I took the whole year. For 2 reaons:

    1. I was bfing

    2. Dh woudl have gone insane caring for dd by himself for that long.

  • I took the whole year, but DH took 3 weeks vacation when DD was born.
  • I'm taking the whole year, and I'm undecided about whether I'll be returning to work. DH is taking two weeks of holidays when the baby is born.
