Crafty/DIY Mamas come in please...CL Project

I found a great deal on a Dutailier Glider and ottoman on our CL.  The problem is I hate the upholstery (and most of the options available from the manufacturer) andthe wood finish would not go well with our other furniture.

Buying a new cushion set alone from the manufacturer  can run about 200 dollars, so that is also not an option.

I would like to paint it and re-upholster it.  I am little worried about getting paint into the gliding mechanisms and if covering the existing fabric is going to look really bad.  I am novice sewer, but I think I can tacke this one easily.

Any tips and has anyone done this?

  • Do you have a picture of it or one like it?

  • here is the exact one from the CL ad.

The upholstery will detach per the seller.  I am trying to get the set for 125, which is about the cost of the ottoman alone new.

  • Let me start by saying that I have never done one before, BUT I have done pillows and a seat cushion.

If it were me, I would buy a cheap roll of paper and trace it.  Cut the fabric a few inches larger all around and go from there.  Or, because I'm lazy.  I might just use some pins and tack it to the piece and cut around it.  The shapes don't look too difficult.

Ditto this.  And as far as the painting goes, as long as you don't glob it on there, it shouldn't effect the gliding mechanism.  I would do several light coats of paint rather than less thicker coats.

  • This post on Ohdeedoh may be helpful, although they don't really provide much as far as tips/directions: https://www.ohdeedoh.com/ohdeedoh/inspiration/makeover-dutailier-glider-079267

Covering the upholstery should be fairly simple, particularly because it looks like the seat detaches. I would cover that separately. For the arm and ottoman (which look attached), I would create a slip cover (with raw edges turned in) and handstitch (probably with a slip stitch) to the original upholstery.

I personally wouldn't paint it unless I could take it apart a bit, but that's because I'm a perfectionist and don't think that I could really get it right fully assembled. The access to surfaces wouldn't be very good. If you do paint, do that before covering the upholstery, so that you don't get paint on the fabric.

  • That looks very similar to the one we got from a friend, but ours doesn't have upholstered arms and we don't have an ottoman. ?The bottom seat cushion comes right off but there is upholstery on the wooden seat that does not come off (this keeps the cushion from sliding off, you wouldn't be able to see it with the cushion on). ?The back cushion has straps that wrap around the top to the underside of the top part. ?I just pulled the cushions off ours and agree that it doesn't look too bad. ?Our back cushion is stitched into long "baffles". ?I think it would be difficult to do that with a cover, but you could pretty easily just do a big pillow case type thing. ?You'd probably want to cover the little straps too. ?If the one you're looking at has the upholstered wooden seat, you'd have to be careful to not get paint on that.

ETA: ?I have to agree with pp on painting. ?I probably wouldn't tackle that part, especially if the arm & ottoman cushions don't come off. ?It looks like it would be a pain. ?
