We have two cats, but growing up we had all kinds of hamsters, gerbils, and guinea pigs. The main drawback to having smaller animals is their mortality rate. We had to deal with a lot of death. But they were a lot of fun to have around while they were alive! LOL.

we are getting Michelle a turtle. It will be kept in the living room on a high shelf so she can look but not touch.

My favorite verse!
We have a dog and a fish. DS adores both! I can't think of a con to either one...except that I have to clean the fish bowl and DH has to pooper scoop. I am thinking about getting a little aquarium for him since he loves to watch the fish swim around him little bowl so much.
We have a golden retriever who is DD's best friend (mine too...I adore her!).
Growing up, I had cats (not such a fan), hamsters (fun, but died after a short while), and a rabbit (horrible!!) and fish (also a mortality issue, but fun).
Small animal farm. We have 2 dogs (chocolate lab and Scottie), a persian cat, a small parrot and both fresh water and salt water fish tanks. My husband believes he is Dr Doolittle. The only thing off limits are rodents and reptiles...I will not live with either.
we have a dog, cat and a fish (had two but one died) DS loves all three of them, although that cat's not to fond of him, but i think that's because she's old and not use to little ones. Our lab however lets DS crawl all over him. DS just likes to watch the fishy. DS's sitter had a turtle which DS LOVES. Growing up i had hampsters (they didn't always live that long) a guinea pig (liked, but not cleaning the cage) rabbit (big mistake) dogs and cats.
We have a dog (mini schnauzer) and a cat. The cons of the dog are the walking and grooming besides that we adore her. The cons of the cat are the litter, the constant shedding, she's super annoying at night, and she's super clingy for a cat - besides that, she's great with DS and has never scratched any of us (the furniture is a different story). My nephew has a fish tank in his room which he really likes (he's 3).
Well, I have an enormous Persian cat that is very dog like...before my weiner dog ran away he would tackle him and hold him down while licking his ears, and he is significantly bigger than the dog...He is the single most awesome animal I have ever known, and I would like to replace the jerky dog with another Persian cat..he is very litterbox vigilant, and the only downfall is if I get behind on his grooming, I need to cut all of his hair off (because it will dread)...which is cute anyway- he looks like a wooly lamb..with a smashed in face and weird eyes....Of all the cats I have known in my life, these are the best- I am allergic to most cats, but not him. Or Siamese cats.
Juniper has a fish tank in her room with 3 glo fish in it..they live a LONG time!! She has had these 3 for over a year- I HIGHLY reccomend them if you're going to get a fish for kids- get a couple, really. they are neato, but the real bonus is how long they seem to live! you can get a little tank for ten bucks at Dirty Walmart, and the fish are I think 1.99 or 2.99 at petco...cheap and fun.
We have a rabbit, horse and a dog. DS LOVVESS going to see my horse but also loves the rabbit and the dog. He is following in my footsteps! The problem with the horse is he is expensive to feed!
