DS will NOT take a bottle : (

I can't believe I am going through this again.... : (

DD started refusing the bottle, but it wasn't until she was about 8 months or so.  DS is not even 3 months and will only drink *maybe* an oz. of breastmilk out of the bottle.....and that is with seriously attempting and it just really coming out of the nipple and falling down his throat.  Ugh....what do I do?  I had planned on supplementing with formula soon just so I wouldnt have to go through what I went through with DD.  She NEVER took a drop of formula despite several attempts.

Oh my GAWD....I must have some damned good milk for both of my kiddos to be like this. lol

So, any suggestions?  I have DH give it to him and I am not in the room or in the house sometimes.  I am planning on going back to work part time here soon and he will be staying with my mom.....but wth am I going to do if he won't take a bottle?  He wants nothing to do with it when it is pumped bm....much less formula!

Re: DS will NOT take a bottle : (

  • I ran into that problem with DD #2.  I just kept trying and if she was refusing it, I'd feed her more often.  Eventually she got over it and it was not a problem anymore.  She had no choice.  I had to go to work.

  • At 10 m/o, my DS is the same way!  He won't take a bottle from me, and get this - not even from DH if I'm not home.  I'm assuming maybe my smell or something lingers in the house, and he knows he'll get the boob eventually, I dunno....

BUT he devours formula bottles at daycare or for my mom at her house.  It's bizarre.  And annoying.

  • I'm sorry!  We had that problem with R at first, too.  We tried about 6 different bottles, and thankfully she decided that she liked the Dr. Brown's bottles.
  • We had 80 billion types of bottles trying to find the right one for dd- have you tried switching up the brands? Sometimes it's the cheapies they like best. GL!

  • My friend had this issues and went right to a sippy cup, even at 3months old, which he took to fine. She was just careful to not tip it so much that he was drowning in milk. Worth a try.

  • DS refused, too, even after bottles, formula, tube feedings in the hospital.   He found boobs & never went back LOL

I discovered his issue was that bottle nips were too long and choked him.  We tried every bottle/nipple combo at BRU and finally found these -

He didn't love them - but they worked.  They make them in BPA free too now.

  • Does he take a pacifier?  With Law, it helped to use the Nuk nipples because they were just like his binkies.  Nuby also makes a new "breast-like" bottle that might be worth a shot.  And there are those Adiri nursers.

Sorry you're going through it (again!).

  • Ugh. ?Bennett did that at the same age. ?I always assumed it was because I wasn't diligent about giving him bottles, since it was just easier to nurse him. ?We went 3 weeks without giving him a bottle, and he wouldn't take one at all after that. ?We tried many different types of bottles-- Adiri and the First Years Breastflow included. ?He never did go back to taking a bottle, but I'm a SAHM so it wasn't an absolute necessity for us. ?I think if I'd have needed to go back to work, then he would eventually just learned to get over it. ?We also would have been more persistent with our attempts to get him to take it again. ?It was very frustrating, though. ?Until he was eating more solids and got better at the sippy cup, I didn't feel like I could ever leave him with anyone else. ?Good luck. ?
