DD is almost 5 months and we have been very inconsistent in feeding her rice cereal since 4.5 months. Maybe once or twice a week. Now that she will be 5 months, I want to be more consistant with it and feed her daily.
Where are you guys on feeding your LO's? Are you planning on introducing veggies or fruits by 5 months? Sometimes I feel behind on this- but I am honestly in no rush.
Also, I know that her bottle is the main source of vitamins- so, when we do start introducing real solids, do I just lower the amount of formula in her bottle, feed her the bottle first- then the stage 1 jar of food? Thanks!
Re: Moms of 5 month olds- where are you on feeding solids?
Def don't feel behind- there is no rush! We just started veggies this last week (just peas so far and she is 5.5 months) and haven't started fruits yet (will probably wait until at least 6 months).
Right now I'm doing some cereal in between her first and second bottle. She gets a bottle when she wakes up and then eats some cereal about 1.5 hours later and then takes a nap. She then takes a bottle when she wakes up from that nap.
Then I do cereal and veggie around dinner time- this is also inbetween bottles- about an hour or 1.5 hours before her bedtime bottle. Don't know if this is "right" but it works for us.
we started solids around 4 months with rice cereal. i only do 'solid' meals at dinner time...i don't have a real reason for this really. i think at 6 mos i'll add lunch, and then eventually breakfast too. since we started the solids, he's had peas, sweet potatoes, bananas, green beans, apples, squash and currently pears (in that order). DS actually gets way more excited for veggies, especially green beans and sweet potatoes. we do the 'same food for four days' thing to watch out for allergies. so each night when he's ready for dinner, i nurse him first till he pulls off, and then i feed him his little meal, which is half of the gerber container of fruit/veggie, and then an equal part cereal, all mixed together with some bm. it makes a nice little portion and he goes crazy for it. i figure the bm makes it taste a little familiar, and the cereal stretches the fruit/veggie a little, and tones down the taste a tad. in any case, not sure if this is 'right' but it's what works for us!
ps- his feedings haven't reduced at all, this little dinner meal is in addition to his regular feedings
DD is 5.5 mo. We started with rice cereal at 4 mo. per our pedi recommendation, but she HATED it. She did a lot of refusing. I just kept trying 1x a day with the rice and after 2 weeks we went to oatmeal which she seemed to like a little better. At about 4.5 mo. I moved to fruit and tried applesauce and bananas which she really loved. My reason for this was that I thought she may take the cereal better if there was fruit mixed in it and they make the cereal already flavored with fruit so I gave the stage 1 fruits a try....and she really liked them and the flavored cereal.
At 5.5 mo. she still only takes about 1-2 Tbsp of cereal in the morning and then about 1/2 a tub of stage 1 fruit at dinner. I never decreased the amount in the bottles, she ended up dropping a feeding on her own and eats about every 4 hrs instead of every 3 and takes about 7 oz. I plan to try veggies at 6 mo.
