Success after IF

XP: BKP babies are here! (very long)

I've been away from the boards for about a week so congrats to all the BFPs and new babies!  I'm going to try to catch up, but there are two little humans that seem to be mine that are requiring a lot of attention. Here's my story:

My OB decided to induce me on the 23rd (38w2d) and we were to report to the hospital at 7 am.  I was up most of the night before and looking back I was probably in early labor.  We got all set up in my L&D room and got the show on the road.  One of my very best friends is an OB resident and she was able to be there for the entire labor.  That helped out a lot.

My doc came in to check me and I was only 1 cm, but "paper thin" so she made me 3 cm by force.  Ouchie.  She broke my water on Baby A at 3 cm and I made it to 5 cm before the epi.  I could've gone further, but I had to have one anyway so I just went for it.  I progressed pretty quickly (by first time baby/induction standards) and before I knew it it was time to push!

I pushed through about 5 contractions in my room and then they moved me to the OR for delivery.  Once there I pushed through another 4 or 5 contractions and Luke Jensen came into the world at 7 lbs. 3 oz, 19.5 inches.   They were ultrasounding me the entire time to keep an eye on Baby B and I was overjoyed to find out he stayed head down.  One contraction later Baby B decided he missed his brother too much and out he came!  Miles Thomas weighed 5 lbs. 13 oz, 19 inches long!  They both looked great and I got to hold them each briefly. Then the real "excitement began.

It became obvious quickly that something was not going right shortly after I delivered the placentas.  I could tell my doctor was stressed about my amount of bleeding and they started massaging (again, ouch!) my uterus to try to get it to contract.  As the minutes went on the tone in the room got more and more tense. They started calling in more doctors and when they got on the phone to the blood bank I knew we were in pretty big trouble.  They asked my husband to leave (never a good sign) and they started pumping me full of drugs. I maxed out on 3 of 4 uterine contraction drugs, they did a curretage (the C in D&C), tried inflating a balloon in my uterus and all the while kept massaging. I finally asked my doctor for the worst case scenario and she said a hysterectomy.  I actually felt relief at that point knowing I'd be around to see my boys grow up.

They finally got the bleeding under control, but my doctor did not want to leave me in such a precarious state.  After being a heartbeat away from a hysterectomy she decided she couldn't risk that I'd start bleeding again. They decided to do a uterine artery embolization to basically decrease the blood supply to my uterus.  When they wheeled me into the room to do this, they told me they didn't know what this could do to my future fertility (and now I know it likely will mean no more children).  We weren't planning on having anymore kids so that wasn't too traumatic.  The procedure was a success and they sent me to recovery.

After the procedure I had to lay flat for 6 hours so I wasn't able to hold my babies or feed them, but after a week we're getting on track with breastfeeding and doing all the other fun things new mommies get to do.  I think I'm still in shock they're actually mine!

And I normally wouldn't post something with my last name, but I'm just too proud of my DH and the web site he made for the boys to resist.  I'll probably take the link off in a few hours, but if you decide you'd like to see it after that you can email me at elizabeth at earthtech dot org and I'll send it to you.  **Edited** I took down the link, but let me know if you'd like it.

Thank you so much to all of you for getting my through this pregnancy and my entire IF journey.  I'd be insane without it!
