Success after IF

Couple of diaper changing questions

Overnight:  So, I feed him from one breast, change his diaper, swaddle him back up and feed him from the second breast so that he can go right back to sleep.  When I open up his diaper, it is quite full.  But, I shouldn't wake him up to change his diaper, right?

During the day: He sleeps sporadically.  I normally still change his diaper when I feed him which is every 2-4 hours.  Should I be changing it more?  Again, its normally full, but I hate to get him all fired up by changing his diaper more than necessary.

And for your reference he normally has a poo and a pee in every diaper change.

Re: Couple of diaper changing questions

  • I'm just speaking for what I did, not sure if there is a "rule" to follow, but I never woke him up to change his diaper.  Even if he slept for 5 hours, I didn't wake him.  A couple of times he would leak thru, but I think that was more of the position he was in...not the diaper.

Now I change him about ever 3 hours, and daycare does the same during the day.

  • I always changed in between boobs when I was BF
  • I never wake Collin up to change him unless I can tell he's really dirty. If I can tell that he pooped, then I'll change him so he's not sitting in it. Sometimes I can tell if he's really full .. I can smell the pee.. and then I'll change him.  But usually I'll just change him when I feed him and it's usually fine.

  • I do the same thing at night that you're doing.  I only use a nightlight, so he might not get completely cleaned, but at least it's not as soggy Smile

  • I change after every feeding and that's about it unless they leak through or cry.  I tried doing it before a feeding or even in between, but it never fails that they then poop audibly right after.  So I don't bother until they are done eating.
  • Thanks so much ladies!  I just wanted to make sure I wasn't being a bad mama!

  • When he was little I usually waited until after I fed him to change his diaper (he's formula fed) because he always pooped after he ate.  When he got older, I'd change him while I was heating up his bottle.

I always changed him if he had pooped even if he was sleeping.  I think it helps with the diaper rash situation.  Ben never had a diaper rash and I think it was because we changed his diaper so much.

  • At first - your stage now- poos come with every pee so there are more diaper changes at first.

After that, I don't change the diaper that much - just mainly with feedings or every other feeding.  I feed a lot though - still ever 2-3 hrs.

Overnight, he wakes up quite a bit.  I don't change his diaper at alld uring night (i did at your stage though).  My DS doesn't poo overnight - if he did I would change it.  I give him a clean diaper before bed and even though I wake up to feed him at night - no diaper change to wake him up more than he needs to be.

I had poos once a day after 2 wks maybe and sometimes not once a day which freaked me out.  But now they are about 1-3 a day.

  • I did between boobs (or in the middle of a bottle) but once he was asleep, no more. Unless he is getting sore from a soiled diaper, I think let him!

  • I never woke DD to change her, but I changed her about every hour as a newborn, every time she peed or pooped.  Sometimes that meant every 10 minutes, sometimes 2-3 hours, but over 20 times a day, including before and after feedings.  (I EPed back then so there was no between boobs. ;))  I still change her as soon as she goes, but it's just significantly less frequently now; it slowed down a bit around 2-3 months, and again around 10-12 months.  I never look at the clock; I just watch her. :)

  • Same as PP - didn't wake DS just to change him. Now that he's 9weeks and not pooping with every wet diaper, I do sometimes change him random times during the day if his diaper feels like he peed in it. He had diaper rash early on so I like to try to keep him in a dry diaper.

Also, for moms of boys, our pedi gave us a tip to cut down on leaks - tuck the tip of his penis down when you put the diaper on so that the pee will be directed into the diaper rather than out the top.
