Success after IF

PCOS - Metformin & Pregnany ?

Hi ladies,

I've never posted on this board but am hoping you can help me out.

I have PCOS and have continued taking my 1500mg of Metformin since I got my BFP. When I was at the Dr a couple weeks ago, he said it's up to me if I want to continue taking it since there's really no scientific evidence either way if it prevents m/c. I have about 6 days worth left and was gonna stop taking it, but now I'm second guessing myself.

What did your Dr have you do?

TIA! Steph

  • My RE suggested I take it throughout my pregnancy. The OB went along with what my RE said.

  • I stopped taking it within two weeks of my BFP.  Ran out, never refilled.

After a loss at 13wks and years dealing with IF and failed treatments (3 failed IUI and 1 failed IVF), we have been blessed with DS (surprise BFP) and now his little sister (2nd round of clomid and TI) on her way. Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker Pregnancy Ticker image
  • I weaned off at 14 weeks. My doctor does believe it helps prevent m/c, but you do get different opinions about that.
  • If I remember right, my doctor had me stop met at 14 weeks. I do have friends that haven taken Met throughout their pregnancy though.. I asked my doctor about that and she told me.. now I'm trying to remember what she said!!  I think it had something to do with insulin resistence..

  • I gradually weaned myself off of it (went from 1500 to 750) between 12-14 weeks.

  • My RE had me stop after we saw the heartbeat at the U/S so that was around 8 weeks.
  • You guys are awesome! Thank you so much for your quick responses.

I think I'm gonna call my Dr and have him prescribe one more month of it to ease my nerves.

    Thanks again!

  • When I started taking met my RE told me (and reminded me several times) to stop taking it immediately if I get a BFP. I wish I had asked him why, but I never did.

  • my RE had me stop at 8w with both pregnancies.
  • Your doctor is ill informed. There are several good studies out there. IS he an RE or an OB? Most OBs would likely not get the info, unless they went out of their way to get it.  Most importantly, there is a lot of evidence coming to light that it helps prevent GD which can ge dangerous if left untreated or controlled. Some experts are saying blood sugar control IS what is keeping the M/C rate down with Met.

I took it all the way through and my RE, IVF clinic, Peri and OB all wanted me to!

    GL!  Congrats!
