Bedtime help, please

I'm starting to dread bedtime. Macy will sleep for 4 hours and then wake up crying at 2am. At first, I thought maybe it's cause her diaper is saturated with urine. Then I've tried feeding her and also giving her pacifier. Those interventions do not seem to help because she ends up tossing and turning in her crib whining every hour. Can teething cause all this? She already has 6 teeths and I've never seen her like this. But another 2 are coming in now and so I'm wondering if all this is causing her distress at night. Plus, she has been pooping alot...about 5 times a day. They are solid and healthy looking (yep, TMI). The pedi already confirmed that she doesn't have an ear infection at her 9 month check up.

  • Sorry you're having a rough time. Maja does something similar... she used to be a wonderful sleeper and not to long ago she started waking up at night. She just cut her 2 first teeth plus she is still BFing and I know that could be a problem when Mom is PG so I'm thinking she is justified by being uncomfortable.

Anyway, sleeping habits can change quickly over just about anything. What I learned from my past experiences is that you can't do much about babies waking up but you can help them learn how to put themselves back to sleep so maybe concentrate on that? it seems like there is always a different reason why they could be waking up so trying to deal with that could get a little tiresome after a while.

Many parents have had luck with CIO although I preffer a more gentler approach. It takes longer this way because there are many baby steps involved but CIO just isn't for me and DD

  • I agree with helping her learn how to put herself back to sleep.  I usually let Colin cry/fuss for a few minutes so that I can see if he's going to easily put himself back down, or if he is wailing his head off and I need to go in.  If I do go in, he's usually standing up.  I give him a drink of water, he usually lays down and I cover him up and leave.

If she is teething-do you give her Motrin before bed?  We always did and it really reduced the nighttime pain for him and wakening.

  • Sounds like it could mean teeth which is temporary.  I usually let Ridge CIO and fuss for about 15 minutes, after that one of us either goes and rocks him and puts him down, lays on his floor next to him or we will just bring him in our room if the first two don't work.
