Curious question about milk

In the milk posts I always see someone write that it's a pain to buy seperate milk.  I was just curious as to why it was a pain.  DS drinks 2% and DH and I drink fat free.  I buy 2 of each every week and I don't find it a pain.  So, I was just very curious as to why everyone else always seems to find it inconvenient?  Not flaming, just curious.

Re: Curious question about milk

  • The only thing I can think of is maybeit takes too much room in the frigdge. I always buy 2 different kinds of milk and don't think twice about it.

  • Because none of us drink a ton of milk, and it goes bad. Milk is expensive, and I don't like throwing it away because the half gallon didn't get finished.

  • I know... I have to buy more than one gallon anyway. the kids drink it up!  they start with their gallon and then help finish off ours by the end of the week.  We go through 2-3 gallons a week.  (we also use our milk in coffee, don't buy creamer)
  • I kind of feel the same way - it's not a pain for me. I buy a gallon of whole for the boys and a half gallon of skim for me. Now, if I had to buy three, I could see that being a pain just from the shuffling around in the fridge - you know the one you want would always be the one shoved in the back. But I don't find what I do now to be inconvenient in any way - for me anyway.
  • I don't find it a pain, but Preston can drink an entire gallon himself before the expiration date. Maybe there dc doesn't drink the entire gallon and they have to throw some out. I don't know.
  • It's a "pain" for me only b/c I am so tempted to drink the whole milk myself - I love milk. I try to limit the theft of my child's whole milk to putting just a little in my coffee. . . . 1% is what I drink . . . or what I supposedly drink :)
  • Because we can't go a day without our milk. And because DH and I drink so much skim milk, and DD only drinks a little whole milk (back when she was drinking whole milk), I was always running out to get milk. It was just a pain.
  • Well, that makes sense then!  DS drinks 2 gallons every week and DH and I go through two gallons ourselves.  We're out by the time I go to the grocery store on Sundays.  So, we never have milk long enough to get to the expiration date.  Yes, I know DS drinks way too much milk.  We're in the process of cutting back.

  • I always wondered that too... I buy 2% and whole and I just grab one of each at the store and go on my way. I don't even think about it.... not a big deal.

I only buy 2 1/2 gallons a week. A half gallon of whole for DS and a half gallon of 1% for me. We also buy organic so it is ultra pasteurized and the expiration date is always super far away. Even if I bought more it would never go bad before we finished it. I don't mind it at all. But we are not huge milk drinkers. Once we have more kids and go through more, I will get it through the milk man at our local dairy.
  • when M was drinking whole milk we had 3 different kinds of milk in the fridge...it was a huge PITA because it took up alot of space in the fridge...now we just have 2 kinds

  • We buy skim and whole...the skim lasts us a week or so and the whole only lasts 3-4 days between the two kids.  So I buy two wholes usually.  I just keep them on opposite sides of the shelf so I don't even have to look at what I'm reaching for.

The only pain about it is that I try to get it from Costco or Kroger, where it is under 2.00 a gallon.  If we run out and have to get it on the fly from a drug store or corner store, it's 3.99 which seems too high.
