Does anyone remember the milk debate?

A while back, there was a debate on the board about whole milk vs 2%. One of the nestie's (who was/is a nutritionist) made several posts about how 2% was just as healthy as whole milk for toddlers.

For the life of me I can't find that thread Sad  Does anyone remember it? Or have the old link?

If not, would you please share your views about 2% and whole milk? What are you currently feeding DC? Our pedi wants us to switch to whole milk.

Thanks girls!

  • I think I started giving DD whole milk when she turned 1. I continued to give her whole milk until she was 2. Then we switched to skim milk, which is what DH and I drink.

It was a PITA buying 2 things of milk. However, I can't even drink 1% milk. It has to be skim.

  • We have been giving Preston whole milk since he was 1years old. I was going to switch to 2% (since that is what dh and I drink) when he turned 2, but his now 2 1/2 and I keep buying him whole milk. He drinks about a gallon a week (between cereal and just drinking it). He is a skinny guy, so I figured the extra fat won't hurt. Soon, we will be switching to 2% though.
  • I BFed until he was 14 months, but introduced whole milk at 1 year. He got whole until he was 2, and then we switched to 1% like the rest of the family.

  • I only drink whole milk so that what they get but even if I didn't drink it I would give them the whole milk anyway.  Danica is tiny and she needs the fat when she actually will drink it

  • I also did whole milk from age 1-2 when we switch to 2%.  We don't like skim or 1% and to be honest, I wouldn't have a problem giving my kids whole.  We only switch because we drink 2% and its easier to just buy one kind of milk.

This is exactly what we did.

  • Thanks girls ~ I really appreciate your replies and information. Zenya, thanks for that link!

I guess we'll be switching over to whole milk then until she's 2 y.o.

  • I don't remember a debate but I know Txgal is a nurtitionist at works at NIH in heart disease prevention.  The conversation in a thread a few months back got me switched from whole to 2%.

That's probably the thread! IIRC, one girl was saying she had to give her DC whole milk and the nutritionist was saying that 2% was just fine.

  • We gave Jake whole milk at age 1, but by 18mo we had switched to 2%. His daycare only give 2% milk to all ages.
