We are debating whther to get dd a regular dresser or a taller chest. I'd prefer a regular dresser, but we can't fit both a regular dresser and a desk in her room.?
I wouldn't think you'd need one until your DCs are in 1st or 2nd grade, or older. ?I did my homework at the kitchen table for years while my mom was cooking dinner.
I had one growing up and literally never once did homework at it. So I would say not important at al. I would rather have more space to store clothes etc.
My son has ALWAYS done his homework on the desk in his room. Whenever he needs help I go into his room to help him. There have been moments when the work is done elsewhere in the house, but the majority of the time in his room, on his desk. He is almost 12yo and in the 6th grade.

So, I say that it's important.
I agree. I always had a desk in my room where I did my homework (it was quiet!) It's also where I did all my creative projects as well. It's not important until DC is older and in school, but if you're buying furniture now, I would opt for the desk.
I didn't have a desk until middle school and even then did not do my homework on it very often, especially since kids sized desks are usually fairly small and don't have a big enough work surface. I actually usually used my bed or the couch because after being at a desk all day I wanted somewhere more comfortable! I'm kind of figuring that between big projects and the amount of homework done on the computer now my kids may not each need their own desk. I'd opt for more storage space for clothes since kids will find a place to work.
I don't plan to have desks in my kids rooms, they are pretty small as it is. They will definitely not have computers in their rooms, so I'll have a good common space for them to work on homework and use the computer.
I did have a desk in my room growing up, but rarely used it for homework.

I didn't use a desk in my room until the final year of school.
We always used the kitchen table while Mum did the dinner etc. She was always on hand to help with the homework. It was great
