SATC Names

The SATC movie was on last night, and it made me realize how many of those characters' names have become increasingly popular lately...

Aidan, Charlotte, Samantha, Lilly, Rose, Brady.

I'm sure history would show that there's a connection between name trends and pop-culture. Any thoughts? Does this make you more or less likely to use one of these names?

Re: SATC Names

  • I watched it last night too and thought the same thing.  I already thought it with Aidan but realized that maybe Brady came from there too

I haven't seen it. I didn't know any of those names came from it. Charlotte makes sense because that blew up! I love it though!

My grandmother's name is Charlotte, and she's never particularly liked her name. My great-grandmother was "Lottie," a common nn for Charlotte. I don't think she liked it, either. When I told my grandmother that her name was becoming really popular for girls, she was sincerely surprised. She hasn't seen SATC, either (thank goodness hahaa... I can't picture her watching some of the hotter & heavier scenes!).

  • I want my future child to have a name that other people will respect, and that my future child will be proud of. ?

Name trends could come and go. ?Some names are just classics. ??

My real reason for wanting to name a future boy name of Aidan or Brady is my Irish heritage, it actually is not a name trend. ?I love those boys names dearly. ? As well, I have a brother named James Bradford, and he goes by Brad. ?So from my list, my mother likes the boy name Brady. ?

  • I think through media is how many names become popular. I never heard the name Aiden until I watched SATC. I also never heard the name Addison until Gray's Anatomy, which has also seemed to spawn the Callie trend as well.

  • IrishSapphire - I totally agree with you. By no means am I inferring that everyone is choosing those names because of the series/characters; I just think it's interesting the some names, especially Charlotte, seem to be in vogue again after a long hiatus. I suspect that things in pop-culture trigger that reaction.
  • SATC--Sex and the City--my husband helped me figure it out. ?I have only seen the movie, but not the series. ?

This is an interesting fact that I found on the internet under a search for the actor Aidan Quinn:

Aidan in Sex And The City was named after me

'Yes, it's true the character played by John Corbett was named after me. I don't know how you know that because I never talk about roles I turn down. But yes, they wanted me for that character, which is why they called him Aidan. I said no, because I wasn't interested in doing a TV show at that point in my life, but I don't regret it. I've never seen the show, but my wife quite likes it.'?

  • That's neat. I never knew that.

  • I agree that shows bring names back to the forefront of people's thoughts. They begin to develop associations with them, discover that they are family names, etc. and the names take off.

I had never heard the name Aidan until SATC, and Charlotte wasn't popular either. I have a grandma named Emma, but that name was outdated and old until Rachel named her daughter Emma on Friends. Now everybody and their brother uses Emma and says they are using it because it is a family name. They wouldn't have chosen that particular family name if it hadn't recently become popular.

If you look at when these names became popular, there are definite ties to pop culture. The Social Security names list even included a blip about some of these and their relation to TV shows last year. Americans talk so much about TV and watch shows related to stars often enough that these names become a regular part of our vocabulary, then we consider them for our kids.

Emma = Friends, rose to popularity worldwide immediately

Addison = Greys Anatomy, was a boys name before then

    Blake/Blakely = Blake Lively

    Isabel = Greys Anatomy

Peyton = a female on One Tree Hill, was a boys name before then

Cohen = the family name on The O.C

Brody = Adam Brody from the O.C.,

Sawyer = character from Lost, name wasn't even in top 1000 until the show

Dawson = appeared on the charts only after Dawson's Creek

Elliot = I kept hearing people debating about this name for a girl, turns out there is a female character on Scrubs named Elliot. There's GOT to be a connection.

  • Well, we're using Brady but it's my maiden name so SATC didn't influence me. But you have a point. Why no rise in Carries though? I heart her...

When it comes to tv shows and baby names I also often think of Emma- Friends and Addison- Grey's.

I've recently seen Sawyer on here which may come up more from LOST.

  • EmmaRain has all the names I said plus a lot more! Should read replies first.... LOL
  • Peyton (and it's million spellings) and Colton are huge in my area of the world...Indiana and Kentucky. Indianapolis Colts connection, anyone?

Absolutely there's a connection.  Same is true other decades, popular baby names in the '70s and '80s can be connected to pop culture of the time too.

The name Shiloh (Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie's baby) wasn't in the top 1000 until 2007.  Also Paris broke into the top 1000 after Paris Hilton became a regular face in the tabloids.

  • For me, it doesn't really have an effect.  I love the name Brady, and so does DH - I tease him that I like it because of SATC, and of course he says he loves it because of Tom Brady.
