Should we be worried???

DS seems to be a little madman lately.  If he runs into us with his little ride-on firetruck and we react with pain-as we do-he laughs this little mean laugh and thinks it is a riot.  Same thing if he throws a toy and we say "ouch" or anything else, like "it isn't nice to through toys, you gave Mommy a boo-boo"  Is this typical reaction for a 23 month old or do we have a future bully on our hands??  I know it is probably just because we react, and other times, if someone on the TV or IRL gets hurt, he says "Oh no" or something else to show some kind of sympathy, but goodness-he scares me?  Will he be pulling the wings off insects this summer for fun??????  UGH-boys.

Re: Should we be worried???

  • LOL your post made me laugh.  My DS is 24 months and does the same thing off and on.  Sometimes he will act mildly concerned but most of the time I think he thinks we are joking around with him and that only spears him on to try to injure us more lol.  I think it is normal and that at this age it is not normal for them to be consistant with empathetic reactions.

  • It sounds like may be doing it because he likes the reaction you give him.  Have you tried time-outs?  A different reaction from you may be the key in getting him to stop.

DD was biting me for a while and every time I said, "Ouch" or "That hurts!" she thought it was funny.  I realized she liked my reaction so I stopped saying anything at all and then started putting her down and walking away.  The behavior completely stopped after a week.
