WWYD- Re: Names

So DH and I both like the name Nolan. After we were talking about it and I thought we had agreed on it, DH asks me which name I like better, Nolan or Jacob. (Jacob has been my favorite name since I was in middle school, I always wanted to name my son that but DH hates it). When he asked me that I wasnt sure what to say because I really like the name Nolan, but the name Jacob has been a favorite for so long that I know it is a name I will always love. Then he tells me that he will "give" me the name Jacob and we can name the baby that because he knows how happy it will make me. (DH is great, I am lucky!!)

So my question- Would you stick with the name Nolan because you know that DH likes it too? Or go with Jacob knowing that DH hates it but he will go with it because he knows you like it so much? As much as I want a son named Jacob, I think I would feel bad knowing DH hates it. WWYD?

Re: WWYD- Re: Names

  • I'd probably go with Nolan.  I don't think I could name my child something DH doesn't like.  I would just feel weird about it.  DH and I already decided that we both have to agree on the name.  It may not be one of our favorites, but we both have to like the name.

I would definitely use Nolan!! LOL I think that you both have to agree on it. I like the name Liam for another boy, but DH does not. He did not like Nolan at first either, but it grew on him. I had to address it, and then let it be for a month, and come back to it .  . Eventually he agreed, and there is no other name that could fit our son!

  • That's a tough one. Maybe he doesn't really hate it as much as he once did. After all he did bring it up after you were all set on Nolan. I would ask him what he really thinks of the name, and go from there. Good luck deciding! I love both names.

  • Jacob Nolan or vice versa..?

I loved Benjamin and still do (not that we are having anymore) but if we had a boy I wouldn't of used it because dh hated it.  On the other hand, I don't dh will notice the name once he meets his new baby boy..right?

  • Ohhh, that is a tough one...  I love both names, so I don't think you can go wrong with either one.  Anyways, I would hold off on deciding for awhile to see how both you and your DH feel about the two names.  Perhaps he will come to like the name Jacob or you will come to love the name Nolan...  However, I am not good at picking names so I don't know if this helps or not...
    Nothing to see here....
  • If you are certain that DH hates Jacob, then I would probably go with Nolan. He might have regrets later.?
  • I'm weird.  I can't pick a name until I see the baby.  We go into the hospital with a list and pick after they're born.

I'd take both names to the hospital and then ask DH again once you've both spent 24 hours with the little guy.

We thought we were going to name both of our boys something other than what we ended up naming them.

That being said - I don't think I could name one something DH hated BUT.... I do think I could name a child something DH didn't like BEFORE the baby came if he told me after the baby was born that he thought the name acutally fit the baby now that he's met him.

    Did that make any sense?

This is what I was thinking.  He may be thinking he doesn't have his heart set on Nolan, and Jacob's not so bad after all.  I think I'd press a bit to see if his feelings had changed somewhat.  You never know...Maybe he mentioned the names to someone else and they influenced his thinking.  I'd definitely have to feel him out a bit more before making a commitment either way.  GL, honey!  :)

  • If I knew DH didn't like a name, I'd probably only use it as a middle name.  However, there are a few names that DH initially said he didn't like but then grew to like them.  I'd ask again when he has time to get used to it and ask him to be honest ... if he still doesn't like it I wouldn't use it but if he grew to like it I'd use it.
  • I don't think if he really HATES it that he would let you use Jacob.  I would ask him if he is coming around to that name or if he would still prefer Nolan.  If he would still prefer Nolan and you like it, go with Nolan I think.
  • I agree with PP's that you should both agree on the name, but DH can't hate it that much if he is willing to name his son Jacob (though he makes it sound like he's giving in a lot).  Why not just keep both names on the table for now and see what your son looks like - I know that's seemingly impossible and probably something I wouldnt be able to do, but I know a lot of people say they dont "know" their child's name until they see them.

I would use Jacob :):) I mean, if your DH really HATES it, then I'm sure he wouldn't "let" you use it.....right???

  • There are so many lovely names in the world, I can't for the life of me imagine why someone would name their child something that either parent disliked.
