Opinions

So, I'm not in love wi.th my 2nd son's name - . DH and I could not come to an agreement, and I let him make the final descision. We have a very long last name, with several z's, so a short first name was needed. What do you all think of the name Kayson?

Re: Opinions

  • I have not heard it before, so it kind of sounds made-up to me. Is it a "real" name...like in name books?
  • I think it sounds okay. Are you thinking of legally changing it?
  • Loading the player...
  • If he's a year and a half I think it is too late to second guess it. Just try to focus on how much you love the boy and not how you feel about his name.
  • I've thought about it, but he recognizes his name. We got the name from a pitcher on the Red Sox a few years ago - Kason Galbert (?).

This is what I tell myself. He is a wonderful little boy.

  • I hate the name. But I think you're stuck with it. It sounds made up and downmarket to me.

I would suggest nn Kay or Kit to just avoid using it.

Don't worry about it then. It's not horrible by any means, just nms. But that's me. You must have liked it at one time, right? I knew a Casey when I was growing up. He was my best friend back then. You could always use that as a nn if you like it better.

  • WTF does downmarket mean MMML???
  • I'd call him Casey if I were you.  Or, use his middle name.

I don't think the name is horrible at all, but if you are feeling this way, I'd make the change now instead of later (not legally, just in everyday life)

I was thinking the same thing, I asked for opinions, but ouch! I think there are much stranger names.

  • Oh don't let MMML bother you.  If anyone brings up a name that is anything but perfectly traditional, it sets off some sort of bat signal and she appears with something snarky to say.

Not at all. Carson is totally nms and I hate the surname as firstname craze but one thing it isn't is downmarket.

Downmarket is any name that is made up, has a y in it for no reason and starts with a K for no reason. To name a few.

I encountered many when I worked with underprivileged kids. It was sad, when they apply for college everyone will know (or suppose) what they are before they look at their grades.

So you hate the name, no need for further discussion. I get the point. We already call him by a nn and I certainly hope that those involved in college admissions don't judge a person by their name.

No, I hate the name AND it falls into a category I think parents don't think enough about. I hate Carson too but I wouldn't worry about how it sounded to others.

Its like Britney. Britney used to be an Ivy League name so everyone wanted it, then by the time Britney Spears was born it was WT. It DOES matter to college admissions, there's tons of studies saying "black" names or WT names get more unfavourable decisions than their grades would indicate. Its not about judging a person by their name, but they have a picture in their mind of this person before they look at the applications, and if that's not fitting with their image of t he school they will read down rather than read up any other info.
