A&D Ointment?

So I was trying to explain to DH what it is for and why...and I told him that we will need to use it every diaper change....then I started to wonder...boy that seems like a lot. I looked it up. They say:

To Treat & Prevent Diaper Rash:

A+D Original Ointment should be used at every diaper change, especially at bedtime when exposure to wet diapers may be prolonged.  A+D Ointment:

  • Provides Long Lasting Protection
  • Soothes and Relieves Irritated Skin
  • Spreads Easily and Smoothly
  • Wipes Off Baby's Delicate Skin Easily

hmmm...so I was right. EVERY diaper change seems like a lot though. Anyone have any opinions or experience on this? It's been a long time since I changed some diapers.

Re: A&D Ointment?

  • Sounds like a marketing ploy to get you to buy more ointment. I only use it when DD has a rash, which is rare. I don't think we've gone through a tube of any ointment yet, and she's 2!

  • I never put the cream on my kids with every diaper change.  One of them had 2 diaper rashes lasting only a day or so (usually when she was having diarrhea).  The other one believe it or not never had one.  I always kept the rash creams handy.  If they seemed a little red, I would put it on just in case.  There are some kids that are more prone to diaper rashes...like my niece was.  Even the regular creams didn't work so she had to get a prescription.  There is no way to tell until your child is here.  But honestly, I think every diaper change is a bit much unless your child is prone to having issues.
  • Thats kind of what I was thinking. Every diaper change seems pretty often.
  • We were told its a good buffer for sensitive skin between the baby and the bowel movement. It was also mentioned that the only time you should put more on is after a BM.?
  • I have this Johnson & Johnson 3-in-1 diaper rash cream and I pretty much swear by it, but I only use it when DD looks like she's getting a rash. That stuff is like magic. She has not had a single diaper rash in 2 years (not a full blown one anyway--if her skin starts to look red I put the stuff on and its gone in less than 12 hours).
  • I used powder most of the time with DS, and only used the cream when he started to get a rash. My pedi told me if you use cream EVERY time, they start to build up an immunity to it.
  • When DD was an infant we only put it on her if she looked red or rashy.  We were changing her at every feeding or when she pooped, so stuff never sat on her long.  Once she got older and started sleeping longer stretches and especially once she slept through the night we put it on every night and only during the day if she looked red.  We eventually even stopped the night time applications, so she only gets it when she looks red.

  • I only used it when DD was starting to get a rash or had a rash.
