FF on demand - how much in bottle?

I'm starting to wean ds of daytime bf because I don't plan to pump at work and am headed back in 2-1/2 weeks. I've been bf on demand and have heard others talk about ff on demand. How much formula do you offer? Always the same amount? We have been giving ds 4oz formula for one of his night time feedings. Should we just always offer 4oz? Seems like we'd end up wasting alot of formula?

DS will be 9weeks on Monday.

TIA!!

Married June '03. DS born Jan '09. DD born Feb '12. No, we didn't choose to be childless for the first 6 years, only the first 3.

  • 4 oz is about right for 9 weeks old.  If LO seems hungry afterwards, maybe offer another oz or so and then you can always give a 5-6 oz bottle later if you think LO is hungry enough to eat that much. I learned that at first it took a lot of trial and error to figure out how much she would eat.  Right now she eats about 5 oz at each feeding and she is almost 11 weeks.

  • I would start out with 4 and go from there. See how much he eats of it. If he is drinking all of it I would up it to 6 and see how it goes.  you will be wasting some formula- it sucks but there is no way around it!
  • how much of the 4 oz is he finishing?  ds is 7 weeks and eats anywhere from 4-5 oz every 3-7 hrs

  • Hmm well my DD takes 5 oz during the day and eats between 2 - 3 oz at her nightime feeding.  The amount of formula is supposed to be about 1/2 of their weight - my DD is likely 12 lbs now but is not quite ready for a 6 ozer.

If you only FF at night you are not wasting much formula at all.

  • Oooh our babies are birthday twins!!  I weaned from BFing almost 2 weeks ago and she eats anywhere between 4-6oz at a feeding.  I usually will offer her 4oz and then if she is still hungry give her another 2 oz.  I have found 2 things happen.  EIther she will just eat 4 and get hungry sooner and then eat a 6 oz bottle, or eat 6 oz and then go 4 hours before the next feeding and sometimes just eat 4 then.  If you dont want to waste formula definitely offer 4 and see if your LO wants more after.
