Success after IF

Reflux moms...

Anyone have any suggestions on what to do to make DS more comfortable after eating? ?He used to be a happy little guy, occasionally fussy crying after eating, with spitting up. ?He is on Zantac, dose maxed on Wednesday by the pedi. ?Since then, every feed he is spitting ALOT, and crying after feeds. ?When he sleeps between feeds, he sometimes cries in his sleep - when I pick him up, he spits up - even up to 2.5-3 hours after eating. ?I called the pedi, they want to give it a few more days on the max dose of zantac before changing meds. ?I have been keeping him upright after eating - it hasn't really helped. ?I just feel so bad for him - his voice this am is even sounding more hoarse. ?And I am beginning to dread feeding him - he just cries until he falls asleep, then he wakes up to eat again, and the cycle continues... ?Thanks!

Re: Reflux moms...

  • My DS had reflux issues and he did get to a point (a bit older) that he was spitting up 3 hours after eating...lots. ?Have you tried different meds? ?Have you switched formulas (we were put on Nutramigen). ?My pedi ordered a upper GI which was totally simple and painless to make sure there were no structural issues. ?As he has gotten older things have gotten much better. ?He is no longer on any meds and only spits up a couple times per week. ?Good luck

  • Oh sorry, I am BFing, so I haven't tried formula, but I have pretty much cut dairy out of my diet...

  • some babies need more (or different) than zantac. Ethan was on zantac for a bit, then we added prevacid, and then dropped the zantac. We are now using just prevacid. They work differently, as prevacid dials down the acid production. Might be worth discussing.

  • It sounds like the reflux is not under control.  I would ask your doc to try prevacid instead.  It can take up to 2 weeks to start working and should be given on an empty stomach an hour before meals. DS is on that twice a day.  It will not help the spit-ups, however, but it will reduce the acid which should help the crying.  If his esophogus is damaged from the acid of the reflux, it an also take a few months to heal once on Prevacid.

The spitting up 2-3 hours after meals sounds like delayed gastric emptying which is common for reflux babies.  The only thing that helps with that is Reglan, which is a motility drug. It helps babies to digest faster.

You should look into seeing a pediatric GI if you haven't already.  A website that might be useful for you is www.infantrefluxdisease.com

  • Ditto on the Prevacid. Zantac did nothing for us.I also went on a dietary restriction until G got better and started reintroducing foods back in since we also BF. Cut out dairy, chocolate, tomatoes, carciferous veggies and anything that caused gas. Prevacid worked for us and I'm no longer restricting foods.Good luck. I know it sucks!
