1 year old -- is that old enough for a Sandbox?

There is a really cute & small one that I was thinking of buying DD for her 1st B-day.  But at that point, will she still just want to eat the sand?  What is an appropriate age for a sandbox?  TIA!

Re: 1 year old -- is that old enough for a Sandbox?

  • When I worked at a preschool we only let 2 and up play in the sandbox.  I want to get one for DD too :(.  I'm thinking about maybe a sand/water table instead.

  • The sandbox I mentioned in my post below is for my niece, who is 14 months old right now.  The manufacturer's rec'd age in the item description says 12months-6 years.

  • For sure! They can always grow into toys like that.  We got DS a ball pit and play cube for christmas.  He's just now using them the "right" way, but he still loved them when he got them as well.
  • My 8 month old LOVES to play in the sand. We have taken him to the beach as well as the park with sand as he plays in them with toys. I definitely do not think that 1 is too young. Plus, if they are never around one, they will never know how to play in it anyway. I say get one... it may take a few times before he gets how to play in it.
  • We just took DD to a park with a sandbox this week and she enjoyed playing in the sand. ?She didn't do a ton of things in it. ?I think by 1 yr. she might enjoy it more but definitely by 2.

  • I wouldn't put Adam in sand because he's still wanting to eat it. So I guess it depends on the child, and how much they put in their mouths at this age. But I keep looking at water tables and thinking how much he'll like one of those this summer!
