Infertility

Feeling very confused after first RE appointment

A brief background - I've always had regular light-medium periods, no issues with them at all, only rarely would I need a Motrin, always normal yearly exams and paps, overall I've always been very healthy, ideal weight, again, no gyno issues/infections.  Dh and I have been TTC since Nov 2007, and after 1 year of trying (and I turned 30 in that year)

I've had an HSG which showed a possible condition that is usually caused by infections(rarely a condition you are born with). OK....then at my RE appt she did and ultrasound that showed some possible troubling things with my tubes & ovaries, maybe cysts, maybe other things. She is waiting to see the films from my HSG and said she may want to do a lap.

I just read the lap post below, and now I'm kind of scared. I guess I'm just in shock that there could be multiple problems affecting my infertility.  Do conditions like endo, cysts, etc normally have symtoms, things that you would be aware of or that would have shown on previous blood tests and exams?

Re: Feeling very confused after first RE appointment

  • I have endo and no symptoms prior to my Lap.  I have always had normal to light regular periods.  I did have a couple painful periods when I was in high school but my OB-GYN said that it was normal.  All other paps and exams where normal.  Even at my first RE appointment he saw nothing on the ultrasounds that looked abnormal!

I had a Lap, which is the best thing I could have done for myself and I am very happy that I went through with it.  It really wasn't that bad.  I was a little sore for a couple days but well worth it!  Good Luck.

After 2 years TTC with mild endo and an elevated FSH. We were successful with our second IUI after Lap surgery. Our daughter born 12/2009. Currently trying for #2. IUI#1-miscarriage, IUI #2-BFN, IUI #3- BFP Pregnancy Ticker

  • Welcome to my world!! ?Turned 30 in 2007, started TTC 12/07 and tried for a year. ?Same as you, normal periods, every 28-29 days, no pain, etc. ?Went for annual exam in 12/08 and fertility testing started. ?HSG in January showed a blocked tube which is why all my signs of ovulation were ok, but the egg couldn't get into the tube. ?Did all bloodwork and ultrasound and all ok per Ob. Referred to RE and he recommended lap to see why tube was blocked and expected endometriosis. ?Didn't find that, but found 3 small fibroids and removed over 20 cysts total during lap. ?I was then diagnosed with PCOS even though ultrasound and bloodwork didn't show anything. ?It's been a wild ride, that's for sure!! ?Frustrating because all along with regular cycles, etc we thought we'd have no problems trying to have a baby. ?I had absolutely no signs or symptoms of those cysts or fibroids. ?It's all been a scary ride. ?Trusting in your RE is important and I'm on my first cycle of Clomid and Met. ??

?I'd say try to relax and wait for the outcomes, but I know I've found that impossible!!?

    Goodluck!!?

  • As for cysts I'm not sure.  Endo though you can have horrible symptoms or none at all. It really is different for each person. I had horrendous pain with my periods for a very long time.  I couldn't move for 2 days and would vomit but I was ignored by dr.'s who would just prescribe me heavy pain pills. Angry but some people have no symptoms at all.

A lap is the only way to know for sure you do have endo. It cannot be seen with any other type of test or b/w. If all your other testing is normal it might be the next best step for you. It is outpatient surgery and recovery is not bad at all.

  • Some times you have symptoms and sometimes you don't.  Cysts often only show up on u/s.  Some bloodwork will indicate PCOS, but given your history, no dr. has probably run the test.  Exams, like your yearly pap, would not show any of these problems.

Just curious, but what is the possible condition caused by infections?

  • Thanks ladies for sharing your experiences & info, that's why I like coming here.   It helps to know I'm not alone!

      - Willis - it's called Salpingitis isthmica nodosa, basically causes an increased risk of tubal PG's and makes it harder to get PG.  That can occur naturally, but is mostly caused by infections, which I haven't had. So they were kind of surprised that seemd to show up on the HSG.
