Infertility

Poll: Does your boss know about your IF?

I'm sure my boss knows that we are TTC; I told him in Jan. about the m/c and needing time off b/c of D&C.  He was very open with me and told me he and his wife had IF issues (I never mentioned ours) and they tried different options (didn't specify what procedures), and were looking into adoption when his wife got pg... and then pg again!  He's a very family man, so the story was very nice to hear.

Now, with all the time off taken for different procedures, etc., have you been open w/ your employer / boss regarding your needing time off?  I was late this AM b/c of u/s... and will be late tomorrow b/c of IUI (luckily the 2nd will be on Saturday).  I was late 2 days last month b/c of IUI (first I said doc appt, and the 2nd day I said flat tire).  I'm tired of lying and making up excuses!

Re: Poll: Does your boss know about your IF?

  • I mostly decided to tell them because I did not want them to think my taking so much time off was reflective of my job satisfaction. I am mostly glad that I told them but there are times when I wish I hadn't said anything.

  • I haven't told anyone about IF except for HR (and that was to get advice on when we were required to announce if we were adopting, also to get advice about different policies we have related to IF and adoption)

I gave them an innocuous little mention of some "bloodwork testing" that I was having done, but honestly there is no real "start time" with my job.  I am a management consultant and if I came in at noon everyday no one would notice.  I always have an option to "work from home" and I don't need to tell anyone, it is completely up to me to schedule my work hours.

It's definately one of the biggest perks about my job.

That said, I'd be shocked if people haven't guessed.

  • No.  No one here knows and I'm keeping it that way.  When I'm a little late in the mornings because of u/s or bw, I just let them know I'll be late and don't tell them what for and technically with the HIPAA laws they can't ask, my personal time off is personal.  When I have to take off for ER and ET in a couple weeks, I'll just let them know I need the day off and leave it at that.
  • They sort of know. My boss's wife works with me. She sort of knows because I have had a couple of break downs in the office I share with her. I also had an adoption of my nephew fall through.

We have not started treatment that requires monitoring yet. I will have to tell them because the closest RE office is an hour away. So I will miss a lot of work.

  • No, my reproductive life is none of his business. I informed him that I had a non-life threatening medical condition that would require a series of dr. appts. That's all he needed to know, and that's all I told him.

I work with some very nice people, but they know way too much about each others' business as it is. On any given week I have at least one person asking if I want kids, if I have kids, or when i'm going to have kids. They don't need to know about my IF.

  • My boss doesn't know anything, not even that we've been TTC for 2 years now. I'm sure she suspects we're trying, but I've never mentioned it to her. My job is very flexible, I can come and go as I need to, so I haven't had to make any excuses or explain my time away for appointments and tests.
  • Mine does...he's my father! So it makes it easy for me to come and go when I need to without any questions.  So since I don't know what it's like to work for someone who's not my relative, it's easy for me to say "tell your boss, he'll understand and help you out as much as possible".  I pray this is true for you, and it sounds like from your previous conversation with him he would totally understand!
  • I pretty much told mine before I knew I had IF b/c I told my boss about my first m/c since I needed time off for the d&c and then my 2nd m/c was an ectopic so I need time off to deal with that as well, so hence after that, figuring out I had IF wasn't a shocker.  So, yeah, I pretty much always just give her a courteous heads up of "hey, i'm starting up again so next month I'm going to be late/out of the office a couple times'.  I figure it's better to tell the truth rather than have her think I'm off looking for another job or just slacking off.  Plus, I feel that bosses are usually more understanding if they realize whats going on.
  • NO.

It is none of their business.  I wouldn't lie about it, but i don't expand on my reasons for going to the doctor, etc.  I say 'i have a dr. appt' and leave it at that.

Would a man tell his female boss if he was taking time off to have the snip-snip done?  I think no....so i'm not offering up any information that they don't need.  Honestly i don't think they'd want to know particulars...

Recently, I've started to get the questions at work too!  I get them all the time from family and friends, and work was my outlet for not talking about it... but now there are 3 women pg and since it would be logical that I should be next!  SO frusterating, considering I DO want to be pg!

  • At my job I have producers that I report to when I am working on there projects, there are 2 of them.  Both women, so I've told them both what's going on and they've been very supportive.  The real "bosses" don't know anything, just that I've had some medical things to deal with.

  • i informed a few key people (but not my boss boss) that i was going to require frequent medical appointments that might cause me to be late to work some days... but that it isn't life threatening and i'm ok.

they took that, said they hoped everying was fine, and haven't asked any other questions.

  • Nope and hopefully they never will. The most I've ever said is that I need to see a doctor or have a medical procedure/appt.
  • Yes. My boss is well aware of my i/f. I came right out to them because of all of the apts I would need to go to. I found being up front very helpful. One of my bosses actually told me that she went through i/f treatments herself.

    Everyone has been so supportive.
