Preemies

Any second-time preemie moms put on bedrest?

DS was born at 33w4d in August 2008. I had an infection, but docs weren't sure if this was why he was early. I came in at 4 cm dilated, but had never had a cervical exam prior. Had no pregnancy risk factors or problems. DH and I are thinking of conceiving #2 in a few months and have a pre-conception obgyn appointment in a few weeks, and it's got me thinking about possible bed rest later in the pregnancy with #2 (although my fingers are crossed for no).

Did your doc put you on bedrest with #2 because of a history with #1, before any symptoms/problems with #2 even presented themself? Or were you watched more closely the second time? Were you considered high risk with #2?

I spent 10 weeks on bedrest with my oldest daughter due to premature dilation. ?I gave birth at 32 weeks. ?With my next pregnancy, they considered me high risk from the start due to my cervical problems from before and my family history (my sister also had a preemie at 26 wks). ?I got a cerclage as a precaution, but was just monitored closely with the advice to "take it easy". ?I no longer could lift/carry my 15 month old, we taught her how to go up/down stairs herself, get into highchair herself, etc. ?When my cerclage did not hold (or subsequent cerclages) and bleeding persisted from a possible abruption, they put me on bedrest. ?My guess is that you will be monitored extra close at first (probably with similiar "rules" I started out with) and then put on bedrest as needed (IF needed). ?Good luck!

  • I deliverd my DD at 26w3d.  With my 2nd PG my high risk OB told me to expect bedrest at about 20-22 weeks.  I never did end up on bedrest with my second one.  I got the 17P injection from weeks 16-36 and I did take things easier than I did with my first.  I had my son at 37 weeks.

  • I had DS at 24w5d due to IC.

I conceived DC #2 when DS was 8 months old and was immediately classified as high-risk by my OB. I had a preventative cerclage at 15w6d and I have been receiving p17 shots and will until week 36.

I was told I will not be ordered on bed rest unless a cervical check shows any changes that warrant bed rest. For the time being, I am just taking it easy when I can, but I have DS to take care of so I am still pretty busy.

I am being monitored every two weeks by a peri (cervical checks vis u/s) until week 28 and so far, so good. Once I hit 28 weeks (depending on how I am doing) they will determine how often they want to monitor me until my scheduled c-section.

  • i too had an infection in my placenta. im not pg but i talked with my OB and she said every pg that a woman has is different. she wants me to do the P17 shots and will keep a close eye on me but never said anything about bedrest. however i did google "infection placenta" and in one article it said that if you had an infection with your first pg you are 50% more likely to have one with the second.
