What led you to the lap in the first place?
What made you decide to have the surgery?
How long did it take you to be successful afterward?
What ended up getting you pregnant?
My SIL is thinking about it since she's had yet another failed cycle with no good reason for it. So I'm looking for info for her because I never had it...so my knowledge is limited. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks ladies!
Re: Anyone have success after lap?
Well....my success wasn't directly related to lap BUT I did have 2 of them so I will share.
I'll answer the questions in order.
1. My laps were done for severe pain from Endo (first lap found stage 2, second found stage 3 with adhesions)
2. Had the surgery for a definitive diagnosis with immediate lesion removal first time. 2nd time was because the pain had gotten so severe that sex was NOT happening so no babies could possibly come of that!
3. My second lap was in 2002...so, unfortunately, 5 years. Only 2 years of very active trying with meds and monitoring though.
4. We had an EP after IUI. Had a repeat HSG performed and per the RE's advice (residual effects possible from the previous month's clomid use [apperently Clomid has a very long half-life] and the viscosity of the HSG contrast possibly helping the sperm migrate to the egg) we "gave it a shot". We found out were were pregnant about 28 days after the HSG!
GL to your SIL.
Yes I did! I credit my lap for my only BFP in 3.5 years of TTC. See my siggy for a brief explanation, but I'll answer your questions too.
What led you to the lap in the first place? 3.5 years of being unexplained, several failed IUI's and one failed IVF. I also failed the beta-3 integrin biopsy (implantation test) which is correlated to endometriosis.
What made you decide to have the surgery? I had leftover cysts from IUI with injectables forcing a break cycle, so I asked for a lap. My RE resisted at first, but I wanted to know the underlying cause of our IF. It was worth it for me to know for sure what we were dealing with. A lap is the only way to diagnose endo, and my RE could also flush & get a look at my tubes and uterus while she was in there. I had no symptoms of endo besides IF and failing the implantation test, but I had Stage II Endo.
I was scared to undergo the surgery, because I had never had actual surgery or general anesthesia, but it wasn't too bad at all. I was sore for several days, and it took almost 2 weeks to be completely back to normal. But I have heard of other ladies who felt fine in a few days, so it varies.
How long did it take you to be successful afterward? My 1st cycle post lap was successful! It was the only BFP I got in 3.5 years, which is why I credit the lap. I was on BCP before the lap, stopped it 3 days after and AF came the next day. I got pg that cycle.
What ended up getting you pregnant? IUI with injectables. RE said we had a good chance trying on our own after the lap, but we had insurance for IUI and I had the meds so we went for it.
If I knew what I know now, then I would have asked for a lap a long time ago. I think it is definitely worth it for your SIL to ask her RE for and even push for a lap. Especially if she is unexplained and has had several failed treatment cycles. As I said before I had no real symptoms of endo (painful periods, family history etc), but it was there. Good luck to your SIL, and feel free to page me if you have any more questions.
What led you to the lap in the first place?
After my second unsuccessful IUI with Gonal-f (apparently a "perfect" cycle) my RE said I could either do a lap and then up to four more IUIs or do one more IUI and move on to IVF.
What made you decide to have the surgery?
I had reason to suspect scar tissue, so I thought the lap was a good idea. I was also very keen to avoid IVF. There was no scar tissue, but my RE did remove minor endo and said my chances of success would be improved by 18% for the next year.
How long did it take you to be successful afterward?
I conceived for the very first time in May 2008, just two weeks after the lap. Nobody had told us to abstain, and I didn't think I would ovulate that cycle anyway (on CD37!). I m/c at six weeks, but conceived again in August, the first cycle we were allowed to TTC again.
What ended up getting you pregnant?
After the m/c, my RE wanted us to try a few natural cycles. Because I still didn't trust my body to ovulate regularly, I asked to be monitored during those cycles. So, I conceived on a monitored natural cycle.
I definitely credit the lap with allowing me to conceive. Good luck to your friend!
I had a lap because of shadows on my uterus from an HSG. My friend had one too and Ithink honestly my RE does this to rule out any uterine abnormalities. I had mild endo and had no idea. (and some polyps which can affect fertility I guess)
the surgery isn't easy. They go through your belly button. I went out of the country a week later, but I wouldn't suggest it.
Sorry to jump in, I post on TTTC. If I get my BFN tom., then I will be getting a lap in April. I'm scared to death to go under. They think I have endo due to symptoms.
Congrats to all of you!! It was very encouraging to read some success stories. I am really hoping not to have to do IVF since I'm OOP for IVP, I get panic attacks just thinking about the cost. I am hoping that an IUI or even TI after the lap will do the trick.
Hopefully I will be joining you all soon.
Once again sorry for jumping in on this post.
