I have my HSG tomorrow morning wanted to know if anyone else had to do this. They office was telling me the details of when to be there and not to eat anything the morning of, and then they said to make sure that I bathe and clean really well down there before I come in and to "douche". I have never heard of this before from anyone irl or on here before. I have only ever been told never to douche because of uti's and infections. Has anyone esle ever been told to do this before getting an HSG? Also, anyone ever gone back to work right after and HSG? Mine's scheduled for 10:30am, and I am tentatively set to go back to work afterwards and was wondering if I am going to feel up to it or not.
Re: HSG Question...
Wow, I've never been told to bathe or douche. Sounds like maybe they just want people to be clean??? I've always been led to believe that douching causes more infection and trouble than it solves, I would totally double check that with them.
I could have gone to work afterwards but always chose not to (I've had several) because they make me feel really lousy emotionally. You will be crampy, but not couch ridden or anything. After my second one I went for a hike through the mountains just to cheer myself up.
Good luck!
The only instructions I had were to take 600mg of ibuprofen two hours before the test. No restrictions on eating or drinking. I've never heard anyone with the instructions you've been given. I don't think I'd follow them, but see what the other ladies have to say!
Good luck and hope your results are good!
Hi. I just had my first HSG tuesday. I was told to eat lightly 1-2hours before, take 600mg advil/tylenol, bring a pad. No douching. If fact, I was told after the HSG specifically NOT to douche. Really, does anyone still do that?
Afterwards, I hopped on an international flight. I was crampy (took advil) and was slightly uncomfortable, but I could have gone to work. Like pp, it was an emotional experience (all worked out ok for me. See post above), and if the results were different, I don't think I could have handled much of anything.
GL and let us know how it goes!
I actually ate beforehand as well, and i've never douched in my life (agree with rebecca...who does that??)
Some things i'd wished i'd known going in for the HSG:
(1) take a pad with you. I didn't know i needed one, and afterwards i had the iodine leaking plus i bled a little. They gave me a standard issue hospital pad which was HUGE, like post-partum huge, and i haven't worn one of those since i was 12 years old.
(2) I took advil beforehand but when they inject the die it still hurts. I was not expecting that. IF i had known then i would not have been so scared when it happened.
(3) There's no stirrups. You have to scoot down to the end of the table and the doc cleans your cervix, then inserts speculum, then the little dye capilary, then he pulls out the speculum and you have to slide up the table and into a full laying position. Leave your dignity at the door b/c pretty much everyone sees what is goin' on down there with all the scooting.
(4) Now you're laying flat and there's a radiologist that comes in and puts the xray above you...then they shoot in the dye. So it's kind of scary b/c you are laying on this table and everyone is staring at you and then tehre is pain. Not terrible, but it's there. I was scared s**tless at this point so ijust started to cry, more emotional than anything. If i had known what was going to happen i dont' think i would have cried...
(5) they turn the xray machine on and watch the dye go into both tubes and spill out the ends...it takes no time at all. AFter dye insertion it's basically a couple minutes and then you are done.
I did not go back to work and i'm glad i didn't b/c i was just emotional and feeling s*tty, especially with that stupid HUGE pad on! I was planning to go shopping but instead i went home and curled up with my dog and a heating pad.
GL!!! Keeping fingers crossed for you...

I just had mine yesterday... and the only instruction I had from them was to come needing to go to the bathroom because they do a PG test.
I also took a pain pill before and was SO glad that I did. Mine hurt really bad... but I have a possible blockage on the left side or maybe a spasm... they cant tell... I came home and layed down for the evening and still am a little crampy today.
