Infertility

Do we see a lot of success with IUIs on this board?

My acupuncturist (who kind of specializes in seeing infertility patients) was telling me that she has never seen someone get pregnant with an IUI .. have we seen a general trend here towards BFPs with IUI or no?

DH and I are considering giving it a try this month as current regimen is clearly not working :P

Re: Do we see a lot of success with IUIs on this board?

  • i think it all depends on your diagnosis and what your exact fertility problems are...     for lots of women, all they need is 1 IUI and boom!   that does the trick.     if it is a CM issue or certain types of MF issues, or just that they needed stims to get a few good follies.       but with more severe MF or egg quality issues, for example, IUIs aren't as likely to be successful.

my guess would be that most people who just need a boost with Clomid or 1-2 IUIs to get pregnant don't get to the point where they see an accupuncturist.    people usually consider seeing one of those after they've been at this for a while, so they might also be the people for whom an IUI is less likely to work.     does that make sense?

  • I hope there is a good success rate for IUIs.  That may be my course of treatment, so I'm hoping for good results.

  • ladychicago, that's a great insight! I think it makes quite a bit of sense -- it could be her own bias as well, as she needed IVF to get pregnant.

i'm an atypical PCOS with no MF issues .. hoping for a good IUI this month :)

  • Like pp said, results of IUI depends on your diagnosis.  We have CM issues, and IUI #1 did the trick for us (but ended in m/c).  We are IUI#3, and RE is very hopeful.

  • you might also want to do a poll over on SAIF about who got PG with IUIs.    i know i see a lot of them here!

  • Try them for sure, but if you haven't seen success within the first 3, I would move on to IVF.  Good luck!

  • My sister had success with IUI, I did not. I would try at least 3. Yes, the percentage rate of success is lower for IUI over IVF, but so is the stress and the evasiveness of the procedure.

After 7 years trying to concieve, 3 failed IUIs and 2 failed IVFs, my third IVF was a success!

  • I agree with the pp, I think it all depends on your diagnosis.  I had 7 IUI's and they all failed, my diagnosis for all 7 were unexplained.  My next step was a lap, my RE found endo and cleaned it out, the first IUI after my lap using Follistim was a BFP.  Sadly, it ended in a m/c at 10 weeks but I honestly feel like the endo was causing me not to get pg before it was cleaned out.  Time will tell how this cycle goes.  GL!
  • Success rates for IUI is not much higher than trying on your own but for issues like CM and slight MFI, it can make all the difference. I have definietly seen success stories.
