Anyone have very small closet in nursery?

Our closet in the nursery-to-be is tiny! It is not the double-sliding-hinged-door type...It has a regular door that opens. Thats it. So, it is the width of a regular bedroom door and deep enough for regular sized hangers. (It is actually a little wider, but it is hard to see/get anything past the wall.)

So, if you have a small closet, how did you organize? I'm thinking we'll just have a small hanging area and then a couple of shelves on the bottom. But then, I feel like I won't have enough hanging space. Any suggestions? TIA :)

Re: Anyone have very small closet in nursery?

  • Ava's closet is really small as well.  This is how hers is set up.  First of all, the only clothes that I hang in her closet are dresses, "outfits," and long-sleeved shirts and sweaters.  All sleepers, onesies, jeans, and pants that aren't part of an outfit go in her dresser as do bibs, linens, etc.  We have a shelf above the hangers where I put stuff that I don't need often or haven't used yet (like her portable high chair, clothes that are too big, etc.).  On the floor of the closet, we have this little rolling organizer that has four canvas compartments.  In there I have extra diapers and wipes and things that I use occasionally, like bottle coolers.  Next to that I have a plastic bin where I put (clean) clothes that are too small as she outgrows them.  I put our diaper bags on top of the bin so that they are easily accessible.

I hope that makes sense!  In the end it is just about being creative, I think.  Plan strategically so that what you will use most often is easily accessible.

  • I don't have any hanging space, and the few shirts of the boys that need to be hung are in my closet, but for the most part it's all shirts and pants, I have shelves floor to ceiling (mine is a super tiny closet like yours).  And just have plastic bins in there and everything is labeled.

I suppose if you have a girl you may need more hanging area, but I only have 3 shirts hung up for the boys right now.

  • Hope technically doesn't have a closet in her bedroom, because I use  her closet.  The closets in our house are tiny, so DH uses the one in our bedroom and I use Hope's.  We got Hope an armiour (sp?) which is even small than my closet, but we hang her stuff up and have 2 shelves we use for her and it works fine.  I am currently cleaning out all of her 0-3 month stuff so we can have more room.  It's hard, but we manage.
  • Our nursery is tiny with a closet like you described so we didnt have room for extra furniture.  We got a closet organizer and it is great!  We can store so much in there - blankets, sheets, towels/washcloths, etc.  Here it is - https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3006581

  • How about no closet space..for twins!..ha..ha. Well, right now we are renting an apartment b/c we sold our house last fall. We are still looking for a new house and our space is SO limited right now. I cannot wait to buy our next house and set up the nursery. At this rate though, I'll be setting up toddler rooms..ha..ha. You can make the space. I have an extra dresser that holds all of the twins first year clothes. The one closet I have holds all of Lilly's clothes. We will def. appreciate what we have in the future after we move. You can make a small closet work. Plus, you'll see that you are rotating clothes so fast b/c they grow so fast. With Lilly, I had a small closet in our old house and I kept her 0-3 and 6-9 clothes in the closet while all the bigger clothes were kept in storage boxes under her crib or in the attic. The closet and her dresser was plenty of room for all the clothes.
  • We have a tiny closet too and we didn't want to spend money to put in a closet system with extra bars. So we're sacrificing even more of our hanging space and will use one or two of these to give us some extra shelf/storage/space. I'm hoping they'll work well for holding onesies, shirts, blankets, sheets, etc.:
